Me and my friend had a fantastic time at this pub, where the style represents the city of Edinburgh! This includes the frames, arch and the counter's layout, where we were served by lovely staff. They were a bit delayed due to a heavy crowd but understandable and I enjoyed the Edinburgh Gin, situated comfortably at a clean table!

It was our first visit in Edinburgh so we were looking for a pub with traditional look. Sandy bell’s was a best choice. We got some beer and many kinds of scotch whisky. Live folk music created a great atmosphere. I would like to repeat it.

A great pub with friendly people! I went to many pubs while visiting Edinburgh, probably around 20, all highly rated. This is the spot that really gave the full experience. Quick service, friendly patrons, musicians and a cozy atmosphere. Perfect spot to duck into when the rain starts and enjoy a pint.

A must when your in Edinburgh. Classic old school vibe complete with little fire and usually a dog lying next to it. Good whisky selection, yummy scotch eggs to nibble, and usually nightly trad session. A great stop off after exploring Greyfriars cemetery

Small Scottish bar with an excellent selection of whisky. We enjoyed the atmosphere and live piano music.

A great pub and super friendly!  I had a great time talking with the locals sitting at the bar, listening to the live music and stroking Kilo the Staffy dog. Excellent selection of drinks and will definitely visit again!

Walked in here after a walking tour cause we were cold and wanted a drink and to warm up and ended up staying over 4 hours. Great vibe, the barman is amazing, fun, and knowledgeable on Whiskys and the area, and there was live music from around 6 pm. Excellent little pub!

I went in as a musician singer/guitarist looking to join in the session and was made to feel incredibly unwelcome by the trio of fiddlers who had been playing. They refused to speak to me or even look at me although I sat down next to them and said hi. In fact, the grim faces and sarcastic mutterings should have warned me. They stopped playing and after about five minutes of awkwardness I suggested that I might do a song, only to be snapped at by one of the fiddlers: “This isn’t a gig! It’s a session!” I left at that point. Obviously, her definition of a session is different from the rest of the world’s. In my opinion, The Captain’s Bar and The Royal Oak, both close by, are nowadays far pleasanter and better-run environments both for musicians and those who come to listen.

Great pub, always got good ales on rotation as well as a good pint of Guinness. Show up at the right time and get some great trad music with the right unorganised, in the moment vibe. Very cosy so don’t expect a seat!
