We have just returned from a Storm Watching Cottage Escape package at The Headland Hotel, Newquay which we really enjoyed, with the exception of one element. Our cottage was all that the hotel’s website claims, pure luxury on windy winter’s days with views to match. The package that we chose was accompanied by either a two-course dinner in The Restaurant (i.e. Samphire), or a 30 minute spa treatment per adult. Our two-course dinner was extremely disappointing. On arrival the large room was almost empty with probably only 3 tables occupied and yet with as many staff as customers the wait to be taken to our table seemed way too long. We ordered our food, we had both decided on a main course and a dessert. The warm bread whilst waiting for our food was nice (but not that unusual!). I had chosen the braised beef and my wife the salmon dish for our main courses. Anyone who has eaten at this sort of establishment will not be surprised that the meal is as much about presentation as quantity and they will not be disappointed on either count here! Unfortunately my wife’s salmon was not sufficiently cooked, it was raw in the middle. Her plate was taken away but not mine. So I was faced with the usual choice, stop eating and allow the food to go cold, or eat. No indication was given over how long it would take for the plate to return or an offer to take my plate too so that we could continue to eat together when my wife’s food was properly cooked. I continued to eat and shortly after finishing, my wife’s plate returned. I would estimate a 20 minute wait. The waitress at this point noted that the chef had told her that the manner in which the salmon was originally cooked was as it should be! Sorry, but if we’d wanted sushi we could have gone to a Japanese restaurant. The food (when properly cooked) was very good. We ordered desserts and they were excellent. We then ordered coffee, one decaf and one white. 25 minutes later a waitress approached us to check that we didn’t want coffee, did we! Another 5 minutes passed and we had our coffee. We did receive an apology from the manager with respect to the coffee, but on the whole we would not recommend this restaurant but to take the spa treatment option if you come on a Storm Watching package. There are plenty of good restaurants in Newquay, with The Stable, The Fish House and Rick Steins just a quick walk away.

Very disappointed on arriving 5 mins late for a dinner reservation to be told that chef refused to serve dinner because he had shut the kitchen down. I am surprised that they were unable to help us in any way. The holder for the keycard clearly states on the back that during school holidays they take bookings to 9.30pm. We eventually decided to drive to the next bay and visit the restaurant at the Watergate Bay Hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Perhaps the chef should have had the curtisy to come out himself and tell us instead of hiding behind his staff and in the safety of the kitchen. Felt sorry for them. I assume he would expect to be treated in the same way if the shoe was on the other foot. I have never ever in all my travels experienced such poor customer service

Poor service which is such a shame for a fantastic hotel and location. Stopped here on a number of occasions and always had a wonderful stay but came for my birthday and booked a terrace table which when we arrived wasn't booked despite us ringing earlier in the day and arranging everything. Luckily a sea view table was available. Then our disappointment continued when we were twice served with the food for the table next to us which in turn caused our food to be delayed and served cold. Just such a shame as my girlfriend had gone to so much trouble to arrange this as a surprise.
