Story

Take a ride on Britain's oldest remaining water balanced cliff lift. Saltburn's Cliff Tramway links the Spa town of Saltburn to the pier and promenade.

Opened in 1884 to replace an earlier vertical hoist the cliff tramway is probably the oldest of its type still operating. The two cars, each fitted with a 1000 gallon water tank, run on parallel tracks. The car at the top of the 71% incline has it’s tank filled with water until it overbalances the weight of the car 120ft below and gently descends while the lower car ascends. When the car reaches the bottom its water is re-pumped to the top and the process begins all over again. The cars are controlled by a brakeman at the top. The 10-12 seater cars were rebuilt to the original Victorian design for the Saltburn 150 celebrations in 2011.

Nice place to visit, it has good views, a tramway and some good fish and chip shops. Plenty to do and see, worth a visit. Some good places to eat and a few Pubs in the area, some with a lot of Smugglers folklore. Some good walks along the cliffs.

Beautiful setting, it wasn't open today due to major works but I have visited many times in past years and I can't wait to see it back open in a few weeks. It's great to see the works being carried out to and investment in the victorian attraction. The staff are knowledgeable of the area whilst giving further information about the attraction to our your son who is keen to understand how it works all using water

This is a beautiful and historic attraction. The tramway costs £1 for adults and is a quick and easy way to get between the top and bottom of the cliff. At the time of writing this the tramway is closed for restoration.

A lovely place for a day out! A funicular railway, a pier, a sandy beach - all you need is good weather. But even when it's not so clement there's plenty of places to eat and drink.
