Ruthin Craft Centre

Story

Ruthin Craft Centre is a craft centre in the historic, market town of Ruthin north Wales.Ruthin Craft Centre is revenue funded by the Arts Council of Wales and is part of Denbighshire County Council. The Craft Centre until 2008 had 10 studios; today it has six, only one of which is occupied. The original Craft Centre was demolished early in 2007, and a new Craft Centre opened in July 2008 in a £4.3 million scheme which contains six craft workshops, larger galleries and an expanded craft retail gallery, two residency studios, an education space and a tourist information centre, as well as a restaurant. The new building, by architects Sergison Bates has been widely recognised, winning the 2009 Dewi-Prys Thomas Prize, being shortlisted for the 2009 Art Fund Prize and highlighted as a 'Design Delight' by the Design Commission for Wales.Director of the Ruthin Craft Centre, Philip Hughes, was interviewed by Culture24 during the Art Fund nomination in 2009.Ruthin Art TrailThe art trail was launched first in 2014, costing £250,000 to attract tourists to Ruthin town. The beginning of the trail is located in the Craft Centre, which in itself brings 90,000 visitors each year. The trail consists of ten spy holes, with 22 figures on buildings and roofs throughout the town to give a flavour of the history and folklore of Ruthin. These "spy holes" include various portrayals of Ruthin's history, from an illustration of the old livestock market, to the myth of a wild dog. Small metal figures have also been devised. The trail is designed to tour people around Ruthin, set out with oak benches and freshly planted trees which are designed to encourage people to explore the town further. The tourists would be led up Market Street, across St. Peter's square, down Clwyd Street which leads to the Old Gaol, and through a series of other streets that will take them back to Market Street.

Hmm, not quite sure what this premises is trying to be. On my recent visit, it was nice to see classes being run for children to create art, which is a definite plus. There were also quite a few of the units dedicated to displays of what appeared to be a community art project, again another plus, which was quite interesting in itself. Sadly there appeared to be a lack people actively making things, which is odd considering it is a craft centre. The main gallery was interesting enough and there were some real stand out pieces. If these items have been created by artists in residence then clearly they're a talented bunch, but where were they! The shop attached to the gallery was a little bit of an eye opener. The majority of the items on display were priced at figures that made you look at them twice to make sure you hadn't misread them. Don't get me wrong there was a good selection of interesting Jewellery, ceramics and glassware, however some of the items pricing seemed to have been plucked out of the air. Very odd and seemingly at odds with the name and concept of the building. It is still worth a quick visit, however I suspect unless you've got money to burn, you'll not pick up much from the shop. Cafe at the premises looks lovely and was fairly busy, but I didn't have time to sample their food and drink.

This place dedicated to displaying and teaching courses in the skills of various creative crafts. There is also a very good cafe with excellent food. The whole centre is on one floor with easy access to everyone.

Disappointed. There were several empty units. Thought there would have been more there. Larger display area underused. Would suit permanent craft stalls to attract regular visitors to the centre. Good cafe.

Beautifully laid out in a climate controlled environment. Worth the visit especially if art and crafts are your thing.
