Royal National Hospital For Rheumatic Diseases

Story

The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases is a small, specialist NHS hospital in the centre of Bath. Since 2015 it is run by the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The building frontage uses Royal Mineral Water Hospital, a previous name.HistoryFrom the 16th century the needs of the "deserving poor" who came to take the healing waters of the Roman Baths were recognised and an act of 1597 gave them the right to free use of the waters. This attracted beggars and was repealed in 1714 but large numbers were still attracted to the city and St John's Hospital was only accessible to local residents. Plans were suggested for a hospital to receive them in 1716 with supporters which included Lady Elizabeth Hastings, Henry Hoare, Joseph Jekyll, William Oliver and Beau Nash. The hospital was founded in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital, and is still known locally as "The Min"; it is also signed locally as the RNHRD. Then, it provided care for the impoverished sick who were attracted to Bath because of the supposed healing properties of the mineral water from the spa. The original building was designed by John Wood the Elder and built with Bath stone donated by Ralph Allen. It was later enlarged, firstly in 1793 by the addition of an attic storey and later in 1860 by a second building erected on the west side of the earlier edifice. It is a Grade II* listed building. There is a fine pediment, in Bath stone, on 1860 building depicting the parable of the good Samaritan. The hospital possesses a number of interesting oil paintings, in particular a picture of Dr Oliver and Mr Peirce examining three patients in 1741.

This place is a true godsend. I don't know where we would be now if we hadn't been referred here for the condition CRPS. The staff are amazing and are truly incredible people.

A fantastic service, I am always treated with respect, I am given options in my own care and my opinion matters to them. I am very very lucky to be cared for by this amazing team, I'm not so lucky as for the reason why I am here in the first place but that is irrelevant. Wonderfully kind team, including receptionists. Knowledgable respectful and approachable medical professionals. I can't rate them highly enough, they have changed my life for the better.

From my first experience of being greeted with a warm handshake, introduction and smile by the consultant who had agreed to see me started off my fantastic experience of this hospital. This continued during the consultation where the doctor genuine listening to me, and making the time to perform a thorough and comprehensive examination and history taking made me feel greatly at ease. My care was firmly at the centre of all the staff's ethos, that I had the pleasure to encounter. This attitude to care meant that I was included in ever step; from gaining a diagnosis, through to options about what treatments were available and being offered a place on a fantastic course that were led by a fantastic team who tailored the course to individuality of myself allowing me to step away with hope and empowerment at the end of the course that I'd have the right tools to start to understand and manage my health (my disease) therefore feeling like I could optimise my health. While never worrying that if was unsure of something or that it things changed I could contact the team and get the answers I needed. A fantastic hospital, great team, continuity of care and understanding of managing the person with the long term conditions in a way that a lot of other hospitals could learn from rather that just treating the disease.
