Story

While HS-1 Cafe Bar, at the Royal Hotel, has youthful ‘attitude,’ it is popular with all ages and features a stylish, modern, international menu.

Specialities include a pot of fresh mussels with a choice of white wine and garlic cream or tomato and basil sauce. Fresh Monkfish is also an excellent local treat - great value, too.

There is a good range of steaks, pasta, wraps, salads, authentic curries and a fabulous burger.

Vegetarians are particularly well catered for at HS-1, with at least eight menu selections, in addition to fish choices.

The hotel is a bit older, but comfortable enough. The room was clean and the beds were comfy. Is it a little dated? - Yes, but you're also on an island that is harder to get to and probably gets less visitors than the mainland. The hotel is reasonable for a few nights. As long as its clean and the plumbing works, I call it a win, which this was. The shower worked fine, the bath products smelled heavenly, and the heated towel rack was great once I could figure out how to get it working. We only had a view of the parking lot and not the castle, but it was fine. The staff were all welcoming and the breakfast had good options. I would return to the hotel if I were on the island again.
If you don't manage stairs, and arrive by car, or have heavy luggage, I hope they put you in a first floor room which has easier access to their small car park off Kenneth Street Road. The check-in is at front of building you can access by stairs. There is NO lift! As the receptionist joked with me, 'the stairs are the gym'. Overall, the hotel is very comfortable, although my single room was compact. The staff give an excellent service at reception, in the restaurant and house keeping. The menu in the restaurant is local and traditional with modern aspects. A very comfortable, enjoyable stay.
Good food let down by unsophisticated and clueless staff.nWe booked a table for 4 people for 19:30, when we arrived there was no table reserved for us and worst of all , the manageress showed no care , looked away and asked one young clueless waitress to deal with the situation.nAfter exchange of few words, they dumped us in bar area . gave us two tiny tables joined together in a very hasty way . We were so close to the kitchen door , we could hear every single word being said inside . There was so much movement behind my back I almost walked out of the restaurant .nI spoke to the manageress about the fact we booked weeks in advance her explanation was as poor as her manners “ Everybody booked two weeks in advance” She replied there was not a single apology.nMy patience ran out , when another clueless waiter delivered the bottle of wine with no glasses . I had to chase him up to ask him to provide wine glasses to drink our wine .nThe staff care free attitude and the arrogance of the manageress will drive diners away from the place.
Very warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were amazing and so helpful and cheery despite being really busy. Food was absolutely fabulous. Room very comfortable so all in a superb visit.
