Royal Hampshire County Hospital

Story

The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester is a District General Hospital serving much of central Hampshire. It is owned and run by the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is commonly abbreviated to RHCH, or alternatively, Winchester Hospital as it is the only open NHS hospital in Winchester. The independent regulator of health and social care in England, the Care Quality Commission positively rates Winchester's hospital - it was rated as "good" overall in 2015.HistoryThe Hampshire County Hospital was founded in Winchester in 1736, but sites in the town centre proved problematic. By the mid-19th century drainage difficulties were so acute that relocation on higher ground was decided upon in 1861, albeit after much acrimonious debate. Florence Nightingale was an advocate of the scheme and advised on the site and building. The eminent architect William Butterfield designed the new hospital, which opened in 1868 with sixteen in-patients and fourteen out-patients. Queen Victoria gave permission for the hospital to be 'Royal' and contributed to the appeal, which raised over £34,000 to finance the project.Later additions to the site include the old Outpatients Department in 1927, Nightingale Wing in 1986, Brinton Wing in 1992, and the new treatment and diagnostic centre (Burrell Wing) in 2006. The site also includes the Education Centre (completed 2006), Florence Portal House (Gynaecology and Maternity) and a creche. Although adjacent to the RHCH site the Melbury Lodge psychiatric unit is not part of the Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust; it is operated by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. The Sexual Health clinic, although part of the hospital, is located off site further down Romsey Road opposite the former Hampshire Constabulary headquarters.

Thank you God bless you all
Got my son here with severe pain and didnt get any help for pain relief at all. Poor kid was crying and screaming from pain. No one cared. Worst hospital experience in my life. Avoid for your kids if you can.
Have had a total knee replacement which all went well until today when I was ready to go home and it started bleeding and wouldn't stop meaning another night's stay! The care I have received throughout my stay has been brilliant, absolutely no complaints, and nothing but praise for everyone, in particular, Gabriel and all the ladies in Physiotherapy. Thank you to everyone.
My wife has been 'blue lighted' into the RHCH on two occasions during the past month and has been in hospital a total of 20 days. We have nothing but praise for the call handlers and paramedics who got her into hospital so quickly. The doctors, nurses and support staff in A&E and the wards in which she was treated were brilliant, caring and professional. Well done to all.
My wife and I have both had Blood Tests taken at RHCH this week. We have to say the service is ACE with very helpful and efficient Staff. What a magnificent transformation from the previous set-up where waiting times were for ever and the waiting room was full of coughing millions. Full marks - well done!
I came to Winchester Urology Dept. from Basingstoke Hospital at the end of May 2022 and I do have to say that I was extremely impressed by the reception intake process, the ambulance people who transferred me and the staff at Winchester. The NHS STAFF Are excellent shame about it being a money pit and it does need an overhaul. I am delighted to be returning for various reasons though.
I was referred to winchester hospital stroke unit on the 31st October from a visit to A&E Basingstoke hospital, well I went on the 1st November to see a stroke consultant then 3rd for altra scan on both sides of my neck then today an mri on my brain got the all clear so got to go back in a couple of weeks for mri on the back of my neck as they think I have a trapped nerve. The nursing staff were brilliant took care of me well I felt so comfortable with them thankyou
My husband took me to RHCH early afternoon on 9.11.22 with an extremely painful knee injury. All the medical staff were professional and kind. I'd particularly like to mention Vicky, the nurse practitioner, who examined me in Minors. She was warm in her approach, professional, thorough, reassuring and clearly explained what she was doing and why she also recognised I wouldn't be able to tolerate ligament stress tests at that time and made a referral to the trauma clinic instead. The radiographer and Lyndsey, the nurse practitioner who took over from Vicky, were also excellent. These medics are worth their weight in gold - if only they were valued by this vile Tory government before we lose them all! I couldn't have asked for better care in the 2.5 hours I was there it was like day and night compared to the experience I had at QA Hospital Portsmouth the night before. Thank goodness I live closer to Winchester - RHCH would always be my first choice!
Four hours they made me sit there promising me it would only be a minute. Liars the lot of them. Sent there from 111 so already been referred to sign off on a prescription. Should have taken any one of their twenty doctors busy texting on their phone. Rather than seeing patients. I watched the waiting room turn over three times without a word. Then I get looked at like it’s my fault fifteen years of my records have been lost like it’s my fault I’m being terrorised by my local council which is how my records are missing in the first place. Never go to Winchester hospital because they will leave you there until your dead
This part of the review is based on my experience with the Emergency Department only. I had three different nurses and one doctor help me. All were efficient, nice and treated me with respect. They communicated well with one another, saw patients quickly, got blood tests and X-rays done in a few hours, kept checking my stats and generally were attentive. I could hear the staff with other patients and they were just as great with them. Really appreciate the help and care I received. I didn’t go to the hospital when I should have when my Covid symptoms were at their peek because I was worried my experience would be as bad as my spouse’s in London last year when he went to A&E for a life threatening condition but it was the complete opposite. No comparison at all. The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester was amazing. There was someone cleaning regularly as well and they had hand washing stations & hand same available. The young Resident wasn’t that knowledgeable which is expected on some level at that stage of learning but some basic knowledge seemed to be missing. Or as I like to say a knack for the obvious was missing. She overlooked some important stats that were abnormal which resulted in me having to see a private cardiologist afterwards because my condition wasn’t taken as seriously as it should have been and it turned out I had heart damage from Covid19. The A&E didn’t perform am echocardiogram which is a must for heart issues. I was there for three hours and felt it wasn’t as thorough as it should have been but that’s the NHS. Underfunded. For something serious like Covid19 organ damage my advice is to ask the paramedics to go to Southampton where they have more knowledge and experience and are using treatments that prevent things from getting worse. Winchester is a smaller less capable hospital so for heart issues and strokes patients should be sent elsewhere. Couldn’t imagine the hospital in Winchester handling something like a major car accident with one Resident and one attending. ******* The Pathology Department is a different story. They are always disorganized, complaining and fighting with one another or yelling at patients. Always get a bruise from the pathologists here, never at the GP surgery and not at A&E. They’ve also screwed up my bloods with another patients and I got their results but knew better because it was so off compared to months before and a private test weeks before. Very incompetent department that needs better management. They should take a lesson from A&E.
