Royal Hampshire County Hospital

Story

The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester is a District General Hospital serving much of central Hampshire. It is owned and run by the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is commonly abbreviated to RHCH, or alternatively, Winchester Hospital as it is the only open NHS hospital in Winchester. The independent regulator of health and social care in England, the Care Quality Commission positively rates Winchester's hospital - it was rated as "good" overall in 2015.HistoryThe Hampshire County Hospital was founded in Winchester in 1736, but sites in the town centre proved problematic. By the mid-19th century drainage difficulties were so acute that relocation on higher ground was decided upon in 1861, albeit after much acrimonious debate. Florence Nightingale was an advocate of the scheme and advised on the site and building. The eminent architect William Butterfield designed the new hospital, which opened in 1868 with sixteen in-patients and fourteen out-patients. Queen Victoria gave permission for the hospital to be 'Royal' and contributed to the appeal, which raised over £34,000 to finance the project.Later additions to the site include the old Outpatients Department in 1927, Nightingale Wing in 1986, Brinton Wing in 1992, and the new treatment and diagnostic centre (Burrell Wing) in 2006. The site also includes the Education Centre (completed 2006), Florence Portal House (Gynaecology and Maternity) and a creche. Although adjacent to the RHCH site the Melbury Lodge psychiatric unit is not part of the Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust; it is operated by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. The Sexual Health clinic, although part of the hospital, is located off site further down Romsey Road opposite the former Hampshire Constabulary headquarters.

I'd like to sincerely thank the doctor who performed my dental surgery, the anesthesiologist who told me she would help me fall asleep. After the second touch of the IV, I don't remember anything. The student who came before my surgery for not taking anything out of his backpack. Thank you for showing me the equipment that shows brain waves. Thank you very much to the entire team for a great job. I'd also like to thank my nurse Sam, Harry, HCSW, and probably the youngest on the team, Emily, a nursing student. You're all great. A big thank you to the women working in the X-ray department. I really thank you all for your complete care and professionalism.
In Praise of the NHS.nnI’ve got a few comments I’d like to expressnRegarding my thanks to the NHS.nIn one six week period, and quite separately,nThree family members required A & E!nnTwo went by ambulance, one made their own way.nOne came home after treatment but two had to stay.nAll involved accidents but no two the same,nBut all entered the annals of family ‘fame’.nnDetails aren’t important. But I’d just like to say.nThank god we don’t live in Trump’s USA.nOur treatment was excellent, here ‘Needs’ dictates.nCost wasn’t an issue like it is in the ‘States!nnDoctors were skillful, nurses truly caring.nAll of their efforts completely unsparing.nWhen the ‘chips are down’ and it comes to the test ,nWith the NHS we’re in the hands of the best
Today I had outstandingly good treatment at the Audiology Department. A charming audiologist took great pains to assess my hearing I am 79 and to fit me with an up-to-date hearing aid, my old one being obsolete. Absolutely first class service, the NHS at its best. Thank you.
Booked in the new Orthopaedic Dept the PreOp was preparation at home & booked in at 7.15 a.m. Should of been same day discharge but slight complication. Out in 36hrs. The support of all the Teams & my surgeon were fantastic. It is an area of expertise & 2 weeks later today I'm walking without crutches. Thank you to everyone
I was in for scheduled surgery this week and cannot state how awful this hospital is. The parking can be bad and not helped by parking machines only taking cash which realistically a lot of people don’t carry £20 day surgery money on them perhaps the odd pound coins. The hospital is a total maze with poor directions but helpful staff who clearly deal with this all daylong. Entering the day surgery clinic the floors had used tissue on them and clearly not washed. I decided to use the toilet but on opening the door the toilet was covered in poo and a used adult nappy thrown on the side. Absolutely disgusting. The other 3 people with me also complained. No way was I risking surgery in this standard of cleanliness. An elderly lady had been there for 3 days and was left in her dress sleeping and unwashed until day 3. I don’t need to say any more! Staff were hoping for a new hospital being built as promised but this government has let them down this Winchester hospital is left to a state of disrepair. Only thing I can say is the staff were friendly.
