We had a two night stay at The Royal Glen for a large family group and had booked seven rooms. It is in an ideal location, being only a two minute walk to the sea front and five minutes to the main shopping area and restaurants. The hotel is full of character and is steeped in history. The rooms have a faded grandeur and are furnished with old style items of furniture. The beds are fairly comfortable. All rooms were very clean and had modern bathrooms although the water pressure of the showers could be an issue if you have long hair (took me twice as long to rinse out shampoo/conditioner). Most of us made good use of the super indoor swimming pool, water temperature was excellent. Pool towels are provided and there are two changing rooms with showers. There is a great bar lounge and drawing room for guests to use. Breakfasts are ok with a fair choice. The smoked haddock was excellent. Our first evening we ate out at one of the local restaurants. The second evening we ate at the hotel as we had booked dinner/bed&breakfast for that night. This was a big mistake as the food and service can only be described as dreadful. 1. We were given large vinyl covered menus which were then not collected, we decided to gather them up ourselves to get them out of the way and left them on a central table. 2. We were not asked what we wanted to drink, we had to ask the waiters for a drink (sparkling water and 3 bottles of wine). Ten minutes later no drinks had arrived, we ended up going to the bar ourselves for some of the drinks. No wine glasses were on the table so these were then given out while we were trying to eat. 3.One of the party didn't order a starter but changed his mind when the first of the starters were served. He asked if he could have the smoked salmon with leaves. He was told 'No as he hadn't ordered it'.....no cooking involved just opening a packet of smoked salmon and a bag of leaves. At this point it really felt like something out of Fawlty Towers. 4. The menu is stuck in a 1980s time warp (steak Diane, lamb chops, lemon meringue pie, custard tart etc) which would be fine if it was cooked well and tasted great, unfortunately for us it neither. One steak could have walked off the plate as it hadn't been cooked (yes it was raw). The waitress did apologise and it was taken away. The steaks that had been cooked were not the best quality (full of gristle) 5.Two of the party had saute potatoes dropped on their lap while the waiters tried to serve the vegetables. 6. All vegetables were served to us by the staff which was very time consuming as we each had to choose which vegetables we wanted (two staff and 14 of us). This meant that some of our meals were getting cold while we were waiting. 7. None of the staff explained where to get the coffee and mints, we again had to ask. The coffee was very nice, once we had found it. The waitress did appear to be trying her best but the two waiters really seemed to have no idea how to wait on tables. A few of us attempted to use the small gym which can only be described as an 'accident waiting to happen'. There were electrical leads trailing everywhere, along with extension sockets. The rowing machine had a rusted chain, the treadmill didn't work, and if it had there was a huge dip in the middle of the running area, the cross trainer was unstable and felt as though it you went too fast it would topple over. None of the electronic displays on these machines worked. The hand weights were rusted in parts and left our hands smelling of iron and rust. Goodness knows when any of this equipment was last checked, maintained and/or serviced. We were so concerned that we did report this as really felt the gym shouldn't be open due to the danger it posed to the guests. If you want a quaint hotel in an excellent location with a super pool then you won't be disappointed. We would not recommend eating here or staying here if you want the use of a gym.

Hotel had a lovely old English feel, very clean and well kept. Room was comfortable the bathroom was nice. All staff were very polite and welcoming, breakfast was fantastic very tasty and great service from the staff. They made a fuss of the little one and made sure his food wasn't brought out too hot. Parking was easy, easy access for prams along the side of the hotel. Only a minute or so from the sea front! Not many bad points other than the Wi-Fi wasn't the most reliable and the bed mattress was a little hard.

A Warm welcome starts a lovely short break in this beautiful hotel. Easy access to the town and seafront, comfortable rooms and scrummy food in the restaurant make for a great time.
