Royal Alexandra Hospital

Story

The Royal Alexandra Hospital is the main hospital in Paisley serving a large catchment area as much as 200,000 from Renfrewshire, stretching all the way to Oban and Argyll. The hospital is owned and run by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, previously NHS Argyll & Clyde. The hospital was officially opened by Princess Alexandra in May 1988.FacilitiesThe hospital has 760 staffed beds.Royal Alexandra provides the local catchment area with many services. These include: an A&E department; psychiatric; general medical and surgical services; trauma and emergency surgery centre; maternity unit and a children's ward, although it is still undecided whether the children's ward will be shut down. The hospital contains the only consultant-led maternity unit for the whole south Clyde area, after this was done away with at Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Both Inverclyde Royal and the Vale of Leven Hospital retain midwife-led community maternity units. The hospital also received some re-located services from Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria as part of a shuffle. Nonetheless, other services from this hospital will re-locate to Southern General in Glasgow to help balance this out fairly.Glasgow Airport bombingThe hospital received patients from the 2007 Glasgow International Airport attack, including one of the suspects who was taken to the hospital under arrest with severe burns. Parts of the hospital were later evacuated when a suspect device, originally believed to be a suicide belt, was discovered on the suspect. On the afternoon of 1 July a controlled explosion of a car was carried out in the car park of the hospital.

Absolutely shocking service. My wife is 34 weeks pregnant and experiencing abdominal pain, yet every time we come to this hospital we are left waiting over 4 hours in the maternity ward. This has now happened three times, and each time the excuse is the same: “no doctor available.”nHow can a hospital run an entire maternity ward — where mothers and unborn babies’ lives are at stake — with only one doctor covering everything, including emergencies? It is completely unacceptable that patients in serious need of care are forced to sit in pain because there simply aren’t enough doctors.nThis is not just a staffing problem; it is a failure of duty of care. Expectant mothers should be seen urgently, not left waiting because the hospital cannot provide basic medical cover. The lack of doctors is not only irresponsible, it is dangerous and puts lives at risk.nThe midwives and nurses try their best, but without doctors available, their hands are tied. Patients are left stranded, worried, and without answers. A maternity ward should never operate like this — the absence of medical staff is unprofessional, unsafe, and disgraceful.nThis hospital needs urgent changes:nEnsure there are doctors available 24/7 in maternity, not just one to cover the entire hospital.nStop leaving vulnerable pregnant women waiting in pain without care.nTreat patient safety as a priority, not an afterthought.nRight now, the service here is nothing short of appalling. If this continues, it is only a matter of time before a preventable tragedy occurs.
We received very poor service at Paisley hospital - fitting in with what we have heard subsequently. We’ve found that most NHS staff are great but addressing critical illnesses needs to be taken seriously and this wasn’t the case in our experience. So if any one has serious concerns regarding cancer, we’d definitely advise avoiding this one and seeking another hospital to help.
Visiting my mum, she was moved from ward 2 to ward 18 and just dumped in a corner of a room and this is standard practice apparently, staff are still friendly and even agree this procedure is a disgrace. There is no regular checks done for blood pressure etc, literally the day before taking a bad turn due to extremely low blood pressure. Have hospitals really fallen so far into disarray, managers here should be ashamed of themselves.
I’ve been to a few different areas and had experience from the different dermatology units. I have to say - when I arrived at a time in need. I was so low & my psorisis was out of control I couldn’t actually cope and I have two young children. The staff have went over and above to help me - the care I’ve received is second to none! From the receptionists ‘John’ - who my kids call Johnny to the sister nurse who took my story so seriously and told the dr. To the dr who booked bloods & got me my injections as fast as she could. To the other nurses who seen me today and gave me relief for itching and actually sat and listened to me. It’s 100% the best team I’ve had to deal with. So thank you!
Roughly 6 weeks ago I was referred immediately by my GP to the trauma clinic for my terrible back pain. Once i managed to haul myself up the hill of doom if only they could build up making it a gradient multistorey via the railing and I tiny step at a time. I received 1st class service, as soon as I got to reception! I was asked to wait until a bed was free, I think I sat for about 20 mins at most, was greeted by a happy lovely nurse, it was also a training day and I offered to help by letting them practice on me. After my tests and MRI my phone was about to shut down and the nurse offered to charge it for me, I was later informed I had to go to the QEUH to see the specialist. I was kept fully informed and regularly checked on. The ambulance service came in and we got sorted out, they were all amazing from greeting to transfer to hand off at the QEUH. I ended up with spinal surgery which was a time sensitive matter and doing ok now in my recovery.
