Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Story

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a 1,677 bed acute hospital located in Govan in the south-west of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. The hospital is built on the site of the former Southern General Hospital and opened at the end of April 2015. The hospital comprises a newly built 1,109 bed adult hospital, a 256-bed children’s hospital and two major Emergency Departments, one for adults and one for children in addition to buildings retained from the former hospital. There is also an Immediate Assessment Unit for local GPs and out-of-hours services, to send patients directly, without having to be processed through the Emergency Department. The retained buildings include maternity services, the Institute of Neurological Sciences and the Langlands Unit for medicine of the elderly and rehabilitation. The facility is operated by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. While some parts of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital have their own distinct identity and dedicated specialist staff, such as the Royal Hospital for Children, each is completely integrated with linkages for patient transfer, diagnostic services, emergency care and even a rapid access lift from the emergency helicopter pad on the roof of the adult hospital. For example, the new children’s hospital is not only linked to the adult hospital but also both the adult and children’s hospitals are linked to the redeveloped maternity building and to the Neurosciences Institute. The hospital hosts services relocated from the Western Infirmary, the Victoria Infirmary including the Mansion House facility, some services from Royal Infirmary and a range of inpatient services from Gartnavel Hospital, Glasgow. In addition, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, previously based at Yorkhill, was moved to a new building adjoining the adult hospital and renamed the "Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow".

The children’s A&E waiting times are an absolute joke. We were waiting for about 45 minutes and most of that time was spent standing as there was not enough seating. The staff were fantastic and took great care of my daughter.

Treatment at this hospital is a disgrace. My husband was admitted in Sunday 17 December with severe headaches dizziness and vomiting. He has had CT, lumber puncture and MRI nothing showing untoward as they say. Now he is lying in his room hardly seeing any staff. They give him pain relief which is not working and now say he has been referred to neurology but can’t say when he will be seen. This is now Friday and he is still in excruciating pain in his head surely he should have be referred when all the scans show as they say nothing but he is worse. I was told by a doctor on Tuesday that it would not be migraines as he was too d for these to start as he had no history of these. When u speak to anyone regarding his condition you get told something different each time some with attitude which is not very professional. I understand the are under a lot of pressure but it cost nothing to be civil to relatives that are concerned their loved ones.

This hospital is a joke. Not the staff's fault there amazing. Far too many patients for one place. Goverment have a lot to answer for. Should be doing more.

I can't speak too highly of the care I received from the staff in this excellent hospital. From pre-op assessment through surgery and four days recovery on the ward, I was treated with care, respect, skill and courtesy so that I felt confident that I was in safe, caring hands throughout. With my own room with en suite toilet and shower, complete privacy and visitors free to stay at all times, I enjoyed a happy and relaxed stay in pleasant surroundings. I can see that staffing is a problem and it's to the credit of the nurses and all other staff that they provide such a high standard of care under the circumstances. My thanks to everyone I met there - thank you so much!

horrendus. how many patients need to fall out of bed and not be found for hours, or collapse in toilets before they realise single rooms without enough staff to man them is a totally stupid idea. my partner had a fall which led to massive complications, he had to be moved to critical care and it took them eleven hours to contact us . He had deterioated so much in the eleven hours that he was non responsive by the time we got to him.
