A little slice of Italy tucked away just off Finchley Road. Paolo, the owner, is really the host with the most, personally topping up our glasses of wine he produces in Italy and offering free antipasti to go with it. And this isn't bog standard nibbles, the food is delicious. Continuing on the the main course the only thing we ordered besides the wine we had a tasty beef stew Paolo insisted I add some incredible meatballs to it, which he hurriedly brought from the kitchen as my dish arrived and a frutti di mare pasta packed with plump fresh mussels and juicy prawns. After that we continued chatting over our delicious wine, and a plate of excellent parmesan chunks landed on our table out of nowhere. So we had some more wine. Finally, the chef came to the table and said 'you want to try something sweet? With mangoes and strawberries?' We hardly had a chance to answer before he came back with what I can only describe as the nectar of the gods. Kind of like a fruit soup, but that doesn't quite do justice to how delicious it was. One caveat - it's cash only. When I realised this, I stood up to go to a cash point and Paolo almost forced me back into my chair, saying "Come another time". I'm still too much of a Londoner to be comfortable with this level of hospitality, so I snuck out later and got the cash to pay the bill, which - incidentally - only included the wine and the main courses. I almost hate to expose this place on Google because it's such a gem, but they deserve a line around the block. There really is nowhere in London like it.
