Rochdale Town Hall

Story

Rochdale Town Hall is a Victorian-era municipal building in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. It is "widely recognised as being one of the finest municipal buildings in the country", and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The Town Hall functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and houses local government departments, including the borough's civil registration office.Built in the Gothic Revival style at a cost of £160,000, it was inaugurated for the governance of the Municipal Borough of Rochdale on 27 September 1871. The architect, William Henry Crossland, was the winner of a competition held in 1864 to design a new Town Hall. It had a 240ft clock tower topped by a wooden spire with a gilded statue of Saint George and the Dragon, both of which were destroyed by fire on 10 April 1883, leaving the building without a spire for four years. A new 190ft stone clock tower and spire in the style of Manchester Town Hall was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, and erected in 1888.

Wow wow wow! This Town Hall is AMAZING! Beautiful mix of Arts & Crafts, Gothic... You name it. Spread over 3 floors, it's huge - and some is still being renovated.nnWould recommend the tour at £8 it was worth it! Guides are amazing: great mix of history, stories and humour. Thank you Carol and gentleman sorry didn't catch your namennThere's a small lift to make floors accessible if in a wheelchair or with mobility issues. Chairs to sit on in most rooms. Mayor's office has robes and mayoral hat to wear for photo fun...nnThey have a community rooms on 3rd floor via a lift to hire which are cavenous, if echoy.nnCafe looked great and was recommended by several people who went straight there after the tour - but we didn't have time to visit that day.
Recently early 2024 reopened after an extensive renovation, this historic building is a stunning reminder of what Victorian architects and builders could achieve. I attended a guided tour of the building which took just over an hour and covered in detail the various rooms and facilities including Queen Victoria's toilet! through which we travelled. I hugely enjoyed my visit and will come again next year when the restored council chambers are opened to the public.
Beautiful town hall, absolutely worth a visit. I did a guided tour which was for an hour but ended up taking two hours. It was very interesting but a little too long. They should try to keep to time.
After the restoration of the Town Hall it really looks magnificent! It's amazing to see the original colours, volunteers giving interesting history and lots of school children enjoying tours. The pop up cafe is lovely and the restaurant due to open in May. Well worth a visit!
