Beautiful setting by the river with great views. Basic castle but good remains. Limited historical info- quite a basic site. Tiny visitor's centre with toilet including baby change.
Extensive and impressive remains of the castle built between 1277 and 1282 at the then-astronomical cost of £9,613 on the orders of King Edward I of England following the First Welsh War, when the king was consolidating his conquest of Wales.nDesigned by master mason James of Saint George, it was the first of the revolutionary concentric, or ‘walls within walls’, castles built by Edward I.nWandering round the castle ruins gives a good impression of its former size and imposing grandeur.nAscend the east gatehouse to the battlements for panoramic views over the castle, village and surrounding countryside.nFree parking for visitors.nSmall gift shop.nOutside seating for refreshments.nWorth a visit.
Amazing castle, very interesting layout and design, relatively cheap to visit too, staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. Might be tricky to park in busy times. Would highly recommend
Super interesting. The view from the top of the castle is simply amazing; you will have a view of an entire surrounding area.nVery well maintained. It is clean, safe and overall well kept. Plenty of educational signs. There are steel straits added for safety to climb upstairs.nThere is an admission fee on entry. Seats and toilets available. The castle also has its own shop. Parking is also available.nAccessibility for wheelchair user might be slightly difficult.
Well worth a visit especially since cadw have put new staircases in to access upper levels, situated in a beautiful area with amazing views. Lots of ruins to explore.
