Princess Royal University Hospital

Story

The Princess Royal University Hospital or PRUH is a large acute district general hospital situated in Locksbottom, near Farnborough, in the London Borough of Bromley. It was opened on 1 April 2003 on the site of the former Farnborough Hospital, where it was built to house the services previously provided by Bromley and Farnborough Hospitals. It was initially administered by the Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust, until a merger with Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust and Queen Mary's Sidcup NHS Trust created the South London Healthcare NHS Trust in April 2009, which took over the running of several other hospitals in the local area. The hospital building was funded partly by the sale of the land occupied by Bromley Hospital, and partly by a private finance initiative which cost £118 million to build, but for which taxpayers will end up paying £1.2 billion to the PFI owners in a deal which lasts for 60 years.PRUH is home to a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit for South East London and has a large General Medical patient mix with over 500 medical beds.2013 TakeoverThe South London Healthcare NHS Trust was dissolved on 1 October 2013, following a decision by the then Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, acting on advice from the Trust Special Administrator. The accumulated debt owed on both the Princess Royal and Queen Elizabeth hospitals was written off by the Department for Health.

My daughter and her partner received the most fantastic care when she went to the Maternity Unit, every member of staff were caring, kind and extremely professional which in turn made my daughter feel confident and comfortable in their care. All staff, from security guard, to receptionist, to nurses, to midwife, to anesthetist, to surgeon were simply fantastic. Baby was born on Christmas Eve, and I couldn't have wished more for him than to be born with the lovely Maternity team around him, and for my daughter and her partner to receive the level of care that they did
Absolutely awful. My mother has been to hospital several times, this one several times, and though her experiences at this hospital are never good, she has never had an experience this appalling. My mother was crying and in a lot of pain, the result of a deficiency that is life threatening if not treated urgently. So, she called 111, who said an ambulance would be 17 minutes at most, however we didn't even see the ambulance pull up until almost 4 hours later. Further, the doctors with her were useless and had no clue what they were doing. She's in hospital for a few days after having blood transfusions, and when she comes home, it looks like the nurses have beat her. The nurses are absolutely appalling, having missed one of her injections several times, which was followed up by them then bursting her vein before they were able to successfully insert the needle. The staff are also rude, and highly patronising, they provide no support for the patients or the patients relatives. A previous time my mother was in this hospital it took us 3 hours to find what ward she was on because the nurses had no clue where my mother was, which is ridiculous. She has had more than 1 heart attack and has been promised emergency treatment and a kidney transplant as soon as possible, yet we have been waiting for these for 2-3 years now. She has made several appointments to help with her illness, but they get cancelled almost every time it comes remotely close to the day of the appointment. Quite frankly, if you're looking for good medical attention with polite and helpful staff, and you are given a choice, I would not recommend this hospital.
I had a procedure this afternoon at the PRU , Day Surgery and cannot speak highly enough about all the staff. Truly lovely and kind. I had such confidence in one of the theatre nurses, no way would I have a limb removed or other procedure apart from planned one with her in charge. They were just great. Surgeon equally professional and kind.
Had a trip to A&E this week following a chronic knee condition. Although I waited around 3/4 hours I was seen by a wonderful A&E doctor. Absolutely fantastic, put my mind at ease and even made me laugh! Helped deal with the problem very quickly and get the right referrals! Came away extremely impressed so thank you Anne!
Quite enjoyed my stay here, although I did get extremely claustrophobic the second night. Night staff were more attentive than day staff. Rachel the night nurse on Surgical Ward 8 is absolutely amazing. She kept me cheerful. I was at PRUH on Thursday 22 July 2021 until Saturday 24th July 2021. Please pass on my heart of thanks to Rachel. X Surgical Ward 8 has only 2 toilets on the ward for bay patients and these include showers. Only one toilet is perfect size, clean etc. Other one is small and sometimes dirty. Second toilet is not nice. Added photos regarding parking in the hospital grounds.
I attended A&E with chest pains this week. The A&E staff were so responsive, I immediately received first class treatment from a highly skilled team of medical professionals who looked after me incredibly well. I was transferred to the Acute Medical Ward where again I was the recipient of excellent attention from every singe member of the team. I even met the Chief Nurse who was helping change beds, such a great example of leadership. I was then moved to Cardio Medical Ward 7. Without any delay I was assessed by a Consultant Cardiologist and swiftly treated with a detailed explanation every step of the way. Not only are the Doctors and Nurses outstanding, so are all of the very important support staff, who work equally hard. I am exceptionally grateful to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you all so much.
I like this hospital, sadly I only come here due to emergencies, but I know from first hand experience that if you stay in you will not be horrified by the food or the members of staff. Today's today chicken smelled really nice Apart from a temporary closure of half of the parking spaces, due to a bigger two floor parking being built, everything else has gone smoothly. I have been coming to the hospital for a few days now, and as already mentioned, the parking is the only thing that I really don't like. Hopefully they finish it soon.
Can’t fault the fantastic staff that work here. Was seen by a lovely lady called Sue in urgent care within 15 minutes of arriving, she sent me to X-ray and had to wait a while which is to be expected in a hospital this size, straight back to Sue for the results, then she plastered my leg, back to X-ray which was quicker this time, again they were very busy. Back to Sue to check cast was holding my bones in the right position. Sue sent me to SAAU to have a blood thinning injection. Was checked thoroughly by the lovely ladies there, weight, bloods and blood pressure and shown how to inject myself. The staff here work so very hard and are really up against it everyday with the sheer volume of patients they see but all the staff I met were so very kind, reassuring and helpful to me, I for one am so very thankful I chose this hospital. Thanks so much to all who looked after me.
I’m basing my review on outpatient and A&E experiences only as I’ve never been an in-patient here. Firstly, knocking one star off for the car parking facilities - the car park is entirely too small and you will end up having to wait for a space which is not great. And that’s the only negative I have to say about this hospital. I’ve found the wait time at the A&E is generally less than other hospitals always sub 2h for me in the area and the staff are generally friendly, polite and knowledgeable. I had to come in multiple times for burns dressings change via that A&E because my GP surgery was not able to support me enough and every time the experience was consistent unlike my GP and my care good. As for outpatient, I was seen multiple times in unit D and the receptionists, the nurses and the consultant that was dealing with me were without exception polite, professional and just nice on a human level. Lastly, the pharmacy - the wait can be a little long because they do get incredibly busy, but they get things right and if they don’t have your medication, they actually follow through with notifying you when it comes in. I wish all local hospitals were equally service focused.
Am currently an inpatient on Farnborough Ward and have been for 6 days following emergency a&e attendance. Was transferred to ITU for several days then stepped down to Farnborough Ward. I have a large individual room with bathroom- sounds nice but unbelievable this modern hospital has no heating whatsoever . My room is extremely cold and when you are sick you aren't moving much. Almost unbearable and bathroom equally freezing. I am now coughing a lot. Some of the Philippines nurses are lovely and cheerfully helpful. I have been an inpatient at King's and although the accommodation is old it's an incomparably better hospital from medical care and the way you are treated. I have little confidence here They seem totally uninformed about my renal condition and the food is far from a renal diet- in fact they have me down as a normal diet although I keep telling them . Can't wait to get away and back to my King's renal appointment. I said last time I wouldn't go back here but unfortunately it was an emergency admission. Very poor in my view. Avoid. has no heating at all
