Pontefract has four stations, Monkhill, Tanshelf, and Baghill railway stations and Pontefract Bus Station. The railway stations need various improvements, who is going to pay for them is an issue the government wants to pass on to passengers. If they revolt by voting with their feet in large numbers then disaster can happen. That's what happened to Tanshelf and the line to Wakefield, no passenger trains for 25 years. A brighter idea is Friends of Pontefract Stations to support them and campaign for funds and resources for improvement and maintenance.

No disabled access and no ticket machine, which means that on busy days you have to queue at Leeds to buy a ticket merely for the privilege of being able to exit the station. Northern Rail should be ashamed of the customer experience they offer here.

Regular trains to Leeds and a few trains to London. Free car park which is covered by CCTV. No disabled access to the far platform though

Small well presented station. Sadly no good for wheel-chairs. Not a station to be alone at night. Useful for castle and town center.
