Sadly, the police federation has always been regarded as a joke by the rank and file members it is supposed to represent, support and advocate for. I'm talking all the way back to the RUC days. Remember the RUC? That heroic body of men and women, who having prevented a bloody civil war, were thrown under the bus in the ultimate act of treachery and political expediency. As he left office, the last big cheese in the Federation said he was especially proud of how he reorganised the Federation. Certainly a career defining achievement when the organisation has how many full-time staff? Half a dozen? Liam Kelly joined the RUC just as it transitioned into the PSNI and when the ceasefire was already a year old. So he never had to take his place in the thin green line during The Troubles and he hasn't been part of the rank and file since he became an Inspector in 2005. When he became a full-time Federation rep, Kelly said his areas of expertise were pensions, equality and working practices. So, what has Kelly achieved in any of these areas over the last several years? Can he name one project that he's led personally that has been successful in benefiting those he represents? The pension offered now is a joke, compared to what it used to be. The working environment is toxic, compared to how it used to be. Morale is at rock bottom and has been for years. Occupational health support is a joke. Kelly recently said so but didn't seem to grasp that he has done nothing to fix that or anything else. God forbid there is a crisis caused by SF deciding to implement a border poll when one of their ex terrorists becomes First Minister. Northern Ireland is still deeply dysfunctional and needs nothing less than the extraordinary police service it had until 2001. Kelly, activity is not the same as results. Get some urgent training from a real trades union like Siptu and start doing your job. If not. Do a Byrne and make way for someone who will.
A toothless tiger who plays up to the organisational top table. Haven't stood up for rank and file in a long long time
Very helpful to advise and direct you where required.
