Story

Playwrights is an independently owned Bar & Bistro in the heart of Coventrys historic cathedral quarter.

Housed in the same traditional listen building on the cobbled streets of Hay Lane for over 15 years, we've solidified our place in the history of Coventrys development. We've seen people come & go, those young & old, helped people celebrate graduations, birthdays, weddings, not to name the rest.

The relaxing atmosphere of our Bistro is a huge positive in the feedback received from recurring visitors. You can sit down and have a tea or coffee and a croissant. Or you can book a table and have a romantic dinner for two. The options are near endless.

At Playwrights, we are passionate about providing the best possible service to ensure you have an enjoyable time here.

Amazing place! Food is always so good and it’s in a lovely part of the city right by the canal side. I have eaten here many times, both my boyfriend and myself have intolerances and we’ve never had any issues, the staff are very knowledgeable and really friendly and the menu is clearly marked. They even update their menu to swap to items with less allergens in them if they can. For example we never used to be able to have the black pudding but they’ve since found a new supplier and it’s gluten free. I have recently attended a vegan evening food in the photos and it did not disappoint!!!!!! I can’t recommend this cafe enough and I always look forward to my visits here. Thank you!!!
The Playwrights is a lovely little cafe with brilliant views and plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the Coventry Canal Basin. It has great coffee, well cooked food, and excellent service from experienced waiting staff, who really seem to care. We were especially impressed by the vegan selection on the menu, and some of the little touches of detail, such as home made coleslaw, and a choice of tomatoes roast or plumb. Our only suggestion would be to upgrade the bread used for toast.
Food is amazing Service attentative Small venue that's quite chatty, so if thats your thing its the right place for you.

Very good ambience. We ordered chocolate milk shake and chocolate muffin was good. We did not like the milkshake, it was very bad. Thinking to try main course next time. Very clean place and customer service was also good.
1st visit after lot's of deliveries over lock down lovely sunday dinner and no washing up. Staff as friendly as always. New venue since moving from Town centre but food still good and plenty choice on menu and can take a nice walk a long the canal after wards.

Lovely cafe with friendly staff. The food was delicious. It is located near the canal basin and has a really pretty view of the waters. Would recommend this little cafe in Cov.

Cozy place and in a very nice setting. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was lovely. I had the Chickenwich and it was fantastic.
