Phoenix Cinema

About

The Phoenix is one of London's leading independent cinemas and one of the oldest cinemas in the UK.

Mission

The Phoenix Cinema is an independent cinema owned and run by a charitable trust on behalf of the people of North London. Its historic building with Edwardian and art deco features is listed Grade II.

The Phoenix first opened in 1910 as "The East Finchley Picturedrome", offering 'the world's finest picture plays'. It has been open as a cinema since and is believed to be the oldest purpose-built continuously serving cinema in the UK - it has never been a bingo hall, snooker hall or dark even during two World Wars.It was one of the first cinemas in London to introduce sound films in 1929 when it was known as the "Coliseum".

Today, the cinema continues to be renowned for its varied film and rep programme with many special and community events. It is a truly independent cinema - it does not receive any public grants or subsidy at all and relies completely on its own income. A refurbishment has restored the original expanse of the foyer space and made it fit for its second century.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, and I must say it was a delightful experience. As one of the last remaining "old school" theaters in the area, it exudes a certain charm that is hard to find elsewhere. Upon entering the cinema, I was immediately struck by the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The seating was incredibly comfortable, making it tempting to sink into the plush chairs and forget about the outside world. It was the perfect setting to fully immerse myself in the movie-watching experience. One of the highlights of the Phoenix Cinema is its diverse selection of films. Whether you're a fan of mainstream blockbusters or independent gems, you're sure to find something to satisfy your taste. I had the pleasure of watching yes again "Oppenheimer" during my visit, and it was a fantastic choice. Another aspect that impressed me was the food and drink options available at the cinema. While some people are popcorn purist it's always a treat to have a variety of options to enhance the movie-watching experience. The Phoenix Cinema also boasts a charming lobby area where you can relax before or after the movie. Highly recommended sipping a cup of coffee and taking in the ambiance of the place. Additionally, the small balcony overlooking the high road added a unique touch to the cinema's overall appeal. It was a lovely spot to people-watch and soak in the atmosphere of East Finchley. I will be returning to the Phoenix Cinema in the future. Its combination of comfortable seating, great film selection, and inviting atmosphere make it a standout choice for movie enthusiasts.
A cosy independent picture house cinema with vintage seats and surroundings. Reasonably priced bar selling a variety of snacks and drinks. Many local eateries for pre- cinema meal. Off street parking available in the evenings.
A beautiful, cosy atmospheric cinema, with original seating and features. Do not expect soft reclining seats or sofas- these are wooden seats covered with cushioned upholstery, old style. A nice bar and café serves drinks and snacks. Worth visiting and supporting this independent establishment.
The crown jewel of East Finchley! Community cinema with a truly independent feel. Still standing strong against hatred. The iconic neon lights have been shining white and blue for weeks!
The Phoenix Cinema is one of the oldest continuously running cinemas in the UK, having reinvented itself many times over to become the beautiful and beloved independent community cinema it is today. Screening new releases, world cinema, classics, independents and live arts, it also hosts festivals, Q & A's, a film studies programme and tours. The art deco building - especially the auditorium with its sculptured reliefs, and the upstairs cafe with a specially gifted stained glass window - is worth a visit in itself. The balcony is lovely to sit and sip drinks on with a view over the High road. It is run as a charity, supported entirely by the public, offering memberships which pay for themselves with the offer of free tickets. A gem that needs fostering and support to be preserved and kept as the gift that is for the London community, it is part of my personal journey and history, just as for many others.
Well done to the Phoenix Cinema for upholding freedom of expression and art by hosting an Israeli film festival. And shame on Ken Loach and Mike Leigh for trying to silence the voices of Israeli artists. Why don't they criticise China or Syria or Iran? Cowards to go for a small, independent cinema trying to serve its community. Which it does, brilliantly.
Britain’s oldest purpose built cinema delivers every time. We watched Nomadland here yesterday and some films are just made for the big screen. So much crying in the dark. The top floor bar is sadly still closed. But the process felt very Covid safe and well organised. Staff are always lovely.
Superb little cinema . Lovely cafe, staff & seating areas. Excellent auditorium I visited the Phoneix Cinema for the first time October 2019 for an evening preview screening. It's a charming cinema with really well thought out layout and facilities and friendly, helpful and courteous staff . I noticed that they have a permanent ramp which is ideal for accessibility into the venue. The foyer is bright and welcoming, with lots of snack and drinks I even found Judes ice creams with the mango sorbet £3.00 working well for me. There are lost of additional seating areas benches and chairs, so if like me, you're early, you'd have plenty of places to relax in. Upstairs the cafe is larger than it seems - I had a long seated alcove area all to myself around the corner. The food and drinks are really extensive even more so than downstairs, so a Belvoir Lemonade £3.00 was in order for me, though I would return when it's less busy during the day to enjoy the offerings. The auditorium is very plush and well cared for with great sound and comfy seats The ladies toilets on the ground floor were small but clean with plenty of mirrors, nice hand wash and cream though the hand dryer was rather lame as myself and other patrons laughed at. From East Finchley station Northern Line take the exit on the left by the ticket machines and walk ahead, there may be a mobile coffee van open, walk pass this to the corner and look left and you'll see the red neon sign for the Phoenix on the opposite side of the street, which is less than and 3 minute walk away.
Lovely independent cinema. Have been coming here for years. Service sometimes a little slow. Not sure why it seems to be so empty so often. Would be great if they could really fill the auditorium.
A gem of a local cinema. Has great selection of movies from new releases to kids programs and old classics. Comfy but older style seats, better snacks and drinks then multiplexes and very friendly staff.
