A very clean and well maintained station. Deserving of the upcoming upgrades to the building and trackwork. Friendly and informative station staff.
So today I left my bag on the train with my house keys and work keys both inside the bag and their where kind enough to ring someone up for me and find out where the train was and when it was coming back and checked that my bag was definitely still in safe hands!! So would just like to say a massive thank you to you all!!
It's been a pleasure traveling too and from this amazing Victorian Style station we call Darlington. Years ago travelling from platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4, made memories happen, although. Many trains have served this station ranging from the 142 Northern Pacers to the 802 LNER Azuma. It's been the foundation of every seaside trip, town or city shopping and I can't wait to see what it shall look like once this station is made larger and more busier than before.
Fairly small station with 4-5 platforms. Easy to find yoi train, plenty of coffee places etc
Mainline station on east coast and station is clean, tidy with helpful staff. Lots of food, drink facilities along with paper / book sales outlets. Parking is however limited and expensive.
Just passing through, train station very accessible and easy to navigate
Paul the group leader behind the desk showed zero sense of urgency despite knowing we were running late for a train and it was already on the platform. In fact he seemed deliberately to be going as slow as feasibly possible, holding back our tickets and recounting them slowly as if he found that amusing. Very frustrating and totally unnecessary. He'll be gutted to know that we made the train with seconds to spare. Other than that, it was an ok station, clean and generally well-staffed.
There is nothing especially interesting about Darlington but it has a pleasant atmosphere and is enjoyable to walk around with its combination of big name shops and interesting little side streets. Be warned though. It's a very long walk from the railway station.
In Need of Redesign This is a good station if you are connecting to a LNER train. Otherwise, there can be problems with the accuracy of the display boards. I was travelling recently and booked into Coach A First Class on a CrossCountry train. The information board showed coaches 1 to 9 numbers and not letters with First Class in Coaches 1 and 9. Station staff were unable to tell me if Coach A was at the front or the back of the train. I was advised to wait near the front. On arrival of the train, I was told that Coach A was at the back. So, I ran down the train, with heavy luggage, only to be told that Coach A was in the middle!! Eventually, I arrived at the correct coach, exhausted, only to be berated by train staff for keeping the train waiting!!! I am sure LNER staff will put the blame on CrossCountry Staff for the confusion and vice-versa. That's life these days. Update. I made the same journey in August 2021. More details now provided on information boards. New markings on the platform have also been introduced to show passengers where to stand for their carriage. But, no details provided on the information displays for CrossCountry trains. I have increased rating from two stars to three stars. Arrangements for dropping people off and picking up remains a long term problem. There are too few parking spaces all too small for modern cars and the turning circle is usually obstructed by taxis. November 2022. My understanding is that this station is due for major refurbishment. About time. Will review again when the work has been completed.
