I have visited a few royal castles and palaces on this trip, and although it is smaller in size and less grand, this was one of my favorite sites. The location and atmosphere, the backdrop to Arthur's seat was breathtaking! Get the tour headset!
This was such a stunning palace. Steeped in history, it offers a wonderful self-guided audio tour, explaining the significance of each room as you pass through them and how it relates to important dates of the past.nnAs a former residence of Mary Queen of Scots, I was particularly intrigued to see where her poor Italian secretary met his demise so long ago. And the fabled blood that could reportedly still be seen on the floor. You may take as many photos as you wish of the exterior, but none are allowed within the walls which actually made it an even better experience because you just paid attention to all the details inside, from the furnishings, to the paintings on the walls, to the ceilings. Not a camera or phone in sight.nnThe abbey ruins and gardens are spectacular. Truly breathtaking. So if the weather cooperates and even if it doesn't take a walk along the paths outside.nnWe also had the opportunity to taste some first rate scones and tea from the tea rooms by the palace too. Great value for money..
Very helpful staff working the Palace, available to answer some questions or give directions. Palace is nice, and it's definitely a plus to have their audio/visual device to explain things. Takes a bit over an hour to tour. Wish interior pictures were allowed.
Very impressive. The royal residence of the king is grand and rich in history. Will not disappoint. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous, and the view from the inside is amazing. The gift shop offers something for everyone. Visitors are not disappointed.
Outstanding piece of history. Staff friendly. Self guiding electronic devices mean you can take the walk through at your own place. Helps an American put all the Royal dynasties together and put names with faces well, paintings anyway. At the opposite end of the 'Royal Mile' from Edinburgh Castle. If you're serious about seeing them both I recommend picking one per day leaving time for other activities.
