We recently had the misfortune of meeting for a friends Birthday in the the Back Yard Cafe ‘Cocktail Bar’. Arrived to be told “Sorry we don't have a menu, oh and we have run out of cocktails, but we have Gin and Rum". Since our friends were already sat scanning the room for any glimmer of atmosphere, we begrudgingly order one Rum and one Gin, bad move!!! No finesse, sticky table and indifferent service. Our bill was £17 for two low-end spirits!!! We were shortchanged too, with a poor reason of "I can't add up" when I counted back the £2 in change given from a £20 note…really! Sorry guys but not good enough. Dimming the lights in a cafe does not make a ‘Cocktail Bar’, though a menu…cocktails…smile would be a step in the right direction! Lewes can and must do better!

Chilled cafe with great selection of vegan cakes and drinks. Tables outside by the Needlemakers car park ,or inside, and a very comfy sofa. Check for updates for live jazz & cocktail evenings too.

Every Friday two of my friends and I meet in Back Yard for coffee and cake. We love the vibrant atmosphere the owner and staff are always friendly and happy. I love that they play good music and are often singing and dancing while they work. The food is good the owner is a fantastic cook with a real flare for all that is edible. There is a young lad who works along side him and he is also very gifted as a cook. The girl barristers produce excellent coffee. I like that the dairy free alternatives to milk are not just soya - my favourite drink is a coconut milk chai latte. The cafe is dog and child friendly and as I have an abundance of both this suits us. I have heard that they have cocktail nights on Friday and Saturday which are very successful. They have an amazing mixologist who works with locally produced and organic spirts. I hope this works out well for them I would love to see these young people succeed. Your doing a great job guys - Back Yard is the best cafe in Lewes.

The food was below average but ok for the price. The girl on the till seemed friendly. The main grievance i had here was with the chef/manager (i assumed). He was getting really stressed/angry and shouting making the whole experience unbearable. I left my tea as I couldn’t sit there any longer......not a nice atmosphere!!! A real shame.

Best scrambled eggs ever had! Amazing salads, sausage rolls, cake and coffee! Visited twice in a day!!
