I moved to Lewes in April 2017 from New Zealand and spent the first three weeks holiday eating breakfast, lunch and dinner in every cafe and pub in Lewes. Laporte's service is excellent, warm and friendly. You get a big tick when welcoming customers as they walk through the door. The chef was using fresh produce right off the shelves in the front of the cafe, how brilliant is that, another big tick. Coffee has a nice flavour for those drinking black Americanos ( that's a long black for you Kiwis ), strong, full bodied, not watered down. Cakes on display all covered, another big tick~ Now why did he mention this you may ask? ...Well, as you will soon learn, many cafes in Lewes do not cover their food to protect it. Would you trust the customer before you, coughing over your Danish pastries......probably not. Food here is fantastic. It's simple chemistry, use the best produce, know how to cook , create tasty, healthy food . Big tick. Now all of these key factors are great but...... You have got to try the French toast, bacon, berries and maple syrup. Laporte's just blows the competition out of the water with this one folks. Laporte's does it better than anywhere else I've been. So if you are a big French toast, bacon, black coffee drinking type, this is your place.

We had the most delicious coffee here. Nicer tasting than I ever remember, but sadly thats as good as it gets. Everything else let it down and we will not be returning. We entered the coffee shop a couple of minutes after 3.30pm, today, Sunday and were greeted by the Male Assistant with the information that "We are closing at 4 o'clock". I told him that that was fine we only wanted a cup of coffee and started to go and sit in the side section of the shop. He asked if we would mind not going in there as he was about to close it, so we sat next to the counter. We asked for two cappuccinos, which I noticed as I glanced at the menu he was holding were £2.50 each. He charged £5.40, so I thought I must have seen the take away price. Anyway we sat and waited 5 minutes, while he was on the coffee machine making our coffee, we thought. My Husband noticed that there were in fact two sizes of coffee, small and large. I immediately asked the guy if he was giving us large, and he said he was. I told him we both wanted small, so he said O.K. Another 5 minutes and he came over to the people sitting at the other table with their coffee and muffins. Another three minutes and ours arrived. Four minutes later we were off. Now why am I having a moan. I am having a moan because at no time was I told there were two sizes of coffee. We had not had an opportunity to see a menu, other than a glance I got at the menu he was holding. He assumed we wanted large Mugs instead of small cups. Then when I pointed out we only wanted small, never did he offer to give us back the 40p we had been overcharged. When we were leaving he never thanked us or said Goodbye. In fact he never even greeted us upon arrival either. We did enjoy the coffee, but we didn't enjoy the customer service.

The food is nice and the garden lovely on a sunny day. There are a few persistent wasps outside. The food is a little expensive but the ingredients are all organic so there's that to consider. Overall a nice stopping off point.

The food was the worst I have had in over 20years and the customer service was very poor and the owner was very aggressive(she always seems to be having a go at her staff) and I will not be returning.
