North Hertfordshire Museum

About

The new North Hertfordshire Museum will open later this year. Meanwhile, our Matisse exhbition is on in the Lucas Room of Hitchin Town Hall.

Story

North Hertfordshire will soon have a brand new museum next door to the refurbished Town Hall in Brand Street, Hitchin. The museum will display collections from the old Letchworth and Hitchin museums and many items from around the District that have never before been on public display.

"A museum telling the story of North Hertfordshire and the people who have lived there, in the centre of the historic market town of Hitchin. There are three galleries of permanent displays Discovering North Herts, Living in North Herts and the Terrace Gallery and one for temporary exhibitions. Each gallery has interactives for children and there is a mini cinema in the Terrace Gallery, showing animated stories of local folklore. The collections range from Palaeolithic handaxes to contemporary art, what may be the world's first football collection and a case of objects from all around the world. The museum includes a shop and café. It is open six days a week Tuesday to Sunday."

Free to get in. Really informative and you can dress up!
Excellent display of Hertfordshire history. Well worth a visit. Only 4 stars because the disabled lift is out of order. However, there is still disabled access via the building next door. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, covid safe and plenty to see.
Went to see the tiger who came to tea exhibition with my grandson. Really good. Lots of children there. Interactive exhibits. The rest of museum very clean, clear and informative. Highly recommended.
