Newark Park

About

Newark Park stands proud on top of the Cotswold escarpment, looking down into the Ozleworth valley to the Mendips beyond.

Story

Newark Park stands proud on top of the Cotswold escarpment, looking down into the Ozleworth valley to the Mendips beyond. This remote corner of south Gloucestershire is a secret and unspoilt place, with barely a sign of modern life visible in any direction. A place of architectural intrigue, quaint gardens and sprawling parkland there is much to see and do at Newark.

Founded by an influential English courtier to Henry VIII in 1550; the house and estate since went from boom to bust, to its dramatic rescue by a Texan architect in the 20th century. Newark has an incredible story to tell.

Newark Park is great, particularly if you have a thing for peacocks! Personally I am not all that enchanted with the history of the building - which is basically a giant folly - but there are dressing-up items inside for the kids and the cafe has some great home-made cakes for not too extortionate a sum. The grounds are lovely to explore, although be mindful that the mobility-impaired are unlikely to get down to the lake and back. If you're going with small children and intend to do the whole circuit, take provisions! And probably a carrier or two for the little 'uns: if the ground isn't completely dry, it's not a terribly buggy-friendly walk. The staff are friendly and informative, and tend to remember repeat visitors: a nice touch and rather impressive considering the footfall they get. Car parking is ample, but there's no hard standing, so if it has been raining for a few days the fields you park on can get pretty churned up. We're regular visitors whenever the park is open, but being NT members and living 10 minutes away means that we can just do that on a whim. The lack of play areas and limited toilet facilities mean that 5 stars would be overkill. Honestly, if you are not an NT member then it may not be worth your while, but if you are then it's worth stopping by. You probably won't fill a day here, but if you happen to see a family with young children dangling off the hedges like out-of-season elderberries and looking for vampires in fallen logs (don't ask!) then do stop and say hi!

We love this place. Especially that the gardens are quite wild and full of character. We visited today for the egg hunt. A great hunt but wellies needed! The peacock is curious and will try and get your cake. Staff and volunteers are friendly. A bit tricky with buggies at times.

We revisited the property after some time. Had a lovely time in the sunshine enjoying the peace of the property. Didn't go inside, but enjoyed the walks mapped out for us. Some of the estate walks are quite steep and uneven, and not suitable for a pushchair. The lake at the bottom was a lovely peaceful place.

Brilliant if you are a peacock fan. You can get around the house fairly quickly. Some lovely walks around the house but not suitable for people with limited mobility. Nice afternoon out but not much on offer in terms of refreshments so take your own or head into Dursley.

This is a great place to take your children, they'd absolutely love it, its easy to get to, plenty of space to park, the foods not too expensive and even though only two room happened to be open there is lots to do!!! Some of the views are amazing, My daughters 8 years old and we managed the long walk around the estate fairly easily so its definitely a winner!!!!
