New Walk Museum and Art Gallery

Story

The New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is a museum on New Walk in Leicester, England, not far from the city centre. It opened in 1849 as one of the first public museums in the United Kingdom. New Walk contains displays of both science and art, international and local. The original building was designed by Joseph Hansom, designer of the hansom cab. It has been expanded several times, most recently in 2011.Major exhibitsPermanent exhibits include dinosaurs, an Egyptian area, minerals of Leicestershire, the first Charnia fossil identified nearby, and a wildspace area featuring stuffed animals from around the world.Dinosaurs and fossilsNew Walk Museum has a significant collection of extinct lifeforms. Two dinosaur skeletons are permanently on display — a cetiosaur found in Rutland, and a plesiosaur from Barrow upon Soar. The Rutland Dinosaur, affectionately nicknamed George, is a specimen of Cetiosaurus oxoniensis. The fifteen-meter dinosaur, which is among the most complete sauropod skeletons in the world, was discovered in June 1968, in the Williamson Cliffe quarry near Little Casterton and Great Casterton. The skeletal remains have been in the museum since 1975; the majority of the bones in the display are replicas of the originals, which are too fragile to be used. The Rutland Dinosaur featured on an episode of Blue Peter, and was opened by Blue Peter's Janet Ellis in 1985.

Absolutely fabulous! Me and my girlfriend went as it opened at 11 and there was no wait to get in! It is completely free as well which is amazing. We didn’t spend long in the animal place as we wanted to see the art gallery. This had lots of beautiful paintings which we spend a long time admiring. We also loved the Picasso ceramics. My personal favourite part however was the dinosaur place, featuring an enormous skeleton which was 40% complete of a real dinosaur!!! It also had other smaller skeletons which were very interesting to look at. At the end we had a look in the gift shop which was very cute and we got some Grow your own cress dinosaurs!!! Overall we spend about an hour in there and we 100% recommend it!
Interesting and nice museum to visit, on the small side. It seem like they do different events during some of the months which gives it new life when you visit again in future.nThe event thats on is about snakes which i throughly enjoyed.nHowever there is one section of the museum you could easily miss, its in the gift shop, left side of the counter going towards the entrance of the museum.nCafe area isn't the best as it machine coffee but cheap £2 and has nice seats!!
Really nice museum, very clean and the exhibits are lovely. With two LO's in tow, we have to say that the rooms allow children of all ages to find something that interests them. We were automatically drawn to the dinosaurs first, and it was nice to see some interactive stations. Wasn't expecting it to be as much fun, but lots of play areas for the children. A dressing up section with an art frame to take pictures. Some very helpful staff. An amazing snake section upstairs with some scales to see how much you weigh compared to various snakes and a fabulous box section that means you get a little snake related fact or surprise. Good day, and it's free entry. Lovely little gift shop, too.
Oh. It is a very nice place. We are not planning to spend a long time, but then we start exploring museum time is flying very fast. Suggest Leicester museum for everyone to understand this city more better
The staff were very helpful and I found it very interesting to learn about some of the city’s history as well as view the amazing art pieces . Free admission and a little cafe for a light bite or a coffee. Would highly recommend especially if you’re visiting Leicester for the first time! Also, the Revolution bar is less than a 5 minute walk away, amazing place to go for a bite to eat!
