Mount Stuart

Story

Mount Stuart House on the east coast of the Isle of Bute, Scotland, is a Gothic Revival country house and the ancestral home of the Marquesses of Bute. It was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late 1870s, replacing an earlier house by Alexander McGill, which burnt down in 1877. The house is a Category A listed building.BackgroundThe house is the seat of the Stuarts of Bute, derived from the hereditary office "Steward of Bute" held since 1157. The family are direct male-line descendants of John Stewart, the illegitimate son of King Robert II of Scotland, the first Stuart King, by his mistress, Moira Leitch. By virtue of this descent, they are also descendants of Robert the Bruce, whose daughter Marjorie was mother of Robert II by her marriage to Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland.

If you still have not visited, then get on with it. This is a fantastic place to visit. The house itself is like nothing you've ever seen before. I've visited twice lately and it still blows me away. Really friendly guides or just amble about yourself. The grounds are spectacular, with meadows, woods, orchards, formal gardens, beach, tea room (not expensive). Good parking. Take a picnic and make a day of it. Love it, love it, love it. If I didnt now live in France Id visit it again.

Mount Stuart is a stunning house on the beautiful Isle of Bute. The exterior doesn't give too many clues to amazing interior. The house has been designed with exquisite detail and there are plenty of guides to tell you about the quirky features which all have meaning. The grounds outside are lovely too - a sea of daffodils, nodding and giving views of the actual sea beyond. My children enjoyed jumping over streams. There is also a cafe selling local speciality dishes and a shop selling tasteful, locally produced wares.

Oh wow what a stunning example of a Tudor house, the marble entrance, the Chapel. All the guides are so knowledgeable about the house. A must see when in Rothesay

Huge grounds. Gardens are beautiful. Didn't go in the house as had dogs with us. Dogs allowed in the grounds on a lead.
