Morden Hall Park

Story

Morden Hall Park is a National Trust park located on the banks of the River Wandle in Morden, south London. It covers over 50ha (125 acres) of parkland with the River Wandle meandering through it spanned by numerous foot bridges. The estate contains Morden Hall itself, Morden Cottage, an old Snuff Mill, and many old farm buildings, some of which are now a garden centre and a city farm. The rose garden has over 2000 roses.HistoryThe estate land was originally owned by Westminster Abbey. There is evidence of an earlier manor-house, but the Hall dates back to the 1770s and contains a variety of natural landscapes, including the parkland of the "Deer Park", meadow and marshland. A number of historic buildings are located in the park, including the Hall itself and preserved watermills where tobacco was once ground into snuff. The Hall was owned and occupied by the Garth family for generations. It was occupied, as a school, for young gentlemen about 1840, until it was sold by Sir Richard Garth to a tobacco merchant Gilliat Hatfeild (1827 - 1906) in the 1870s.The Hall was a military hospital during the First World War.Gilliat Hatfeild's son, Gilliat Edward Hatfeild (1864 - 9 February 1941), left the core of the estate (including the house) to the National Trust, when he died. The Hall is now an exclusive Wedding Venue, offering a beautiful location together with fine foods and drink. It had previously been a Whitbread plc owned restaurant.

Great garden centre, good coffee shop with a decent range of treats. The Christmas section is always good and normally has stuff that you don't see in every other garden centre. The aquatics section is very good however being a saltwater fish keeper it's range for that is not great, I kind of expect that though as it's a bit more specialist so this should not be taken as a negative. The car park fills up quick so would advise getting there when it opens, there are some loevly grounds behind it so you can walk off the calories you have just consumed in the coffee shop.

as always a genuine pleasure to visit here. to have such a lovely public green space in South London is a joy. although this is a National Trust property you do NOT need to be a member to access it. there's a children's adventure playground thing with wire slide and usual sort of things to clamber over. a little tea room which is good and a large garden center with lots of lovely items and gifts. My favourite part however is the second hand bookshop in what I suspect is the old stables. well worth a visit as its got a large car park and is easily accessible by bus or tram.

We went for the Easter trail. The kids were given a sheet with clues about wildlife. When they got all the answers right, they got a a Dairy Milk egg each. Before we started the trail, we had a picnic at the tables, then we got going. Most of the route was along the mill stream. It's a lovely park, with mallards on the mill stream.

Nice and big park, little river flowing through the park (shallow water, so both dogs and people can ease wade in it). There is an adventure playground, but half of it was flooded with what now looks like a middle-sized pond today (it was raining for the last week). Lots and lots of mosquitoes at this point of the year (April), in summer less, as I remember. Lots of space for dog walks

Lovely flat park , gardens and wetlands. The latter is accessed by a wheelchair friendly boardwalk. There is a NT restaurant that serves good if expensive food. Seating both indoors and outdoors when the weather is good. Restaurant is very busy at lunchtime. Large NT garden centre and shop with a large selection of products and plants. There is a large pay and display car park that is free to NT members. Busy road access but very good Tramlink service if suitable to you. A place worth a visit at all times of the year.
