Montague Arms

Story

Nearest Tube: New Cross Gate Nearest BR: Queens Rd, Peckham, New Cross Gate, Bus: 36, 177, 343, 436.

An idiosyncratic gem. Stuck out on a bend of the main road between Peckham and Europe, the Montague has by tradition attracted coachloads of tourists bound for Dover. Somewhere in the attics of neat homes across Holland must be snaps of this weird English pub, with its zebra heads and maritime knick-knacks – perhaps even a group shot with laconic Stan, the landlord. It’s not only Eurostar and easyJet that have changed the dynamic of this low-ceilinged anomaly – locals, who 20 years ago would have scoffed at the Casio entertainment provided by Peter ‘Two Moogs’ London from the main stage, now cherish and patronise it. On Sundays, when medieval hulks of meat are slavered in gravy and served to the compact row of dining tables, you can’t move. Regular live entertainment brings a fresh crowd from Goldsmiths College

Under new management this place is so much better than before
Staff was super nice. There is no food there but you can get delivery at the place. Boardgames, and old school video game
Under new management and doing a fine job. Free games to play, good selection of beers. I would like to see some events though; pub quiz or something. But other than that, a nice place to go
Nice pub! Huge space with table football n old fashioned pin ball machines.
Was a very unique pub and music venue. Now they've gutted it and turned into the same old same old gastro pub that's bored the life out you 20 times already - a real shame. There was so much history in these walls, the stage the ornaments - shocking to see it all gone.
Great place to have a quite pint and chill
Good atmosphere and good choice of drinks. What I really like of this place is that it has lots of game to play with your friends or by yourself if you go just for a walk and drink solo.
This place used to be amazing, but the new owners have eviscerated it and turned it into a generic hotel bar looking piece of nothing. It is now the worst
