Excellent treasure trove just a stones throw from Lewes. We explored the beautiful house and gardens. We were welcomed by lovely Sandra and Yvonne whom informed us on all matters Virginia Wolf. Found out I was more into Vanessa ; the nearby Church and scenery is stunning! We’ll Definitely be visiting again when it opens in the spring!
Beautiful house and gardens regardless of the literary connection. For fans of Virginia Woolf, walking the same path to her writing room and admiring the view of the hills from where such an important writer sat is quite unforgettable an experience. There were free performances of Sussex folk storytelling in the fields when we visited. Picturesque village, the second-most ‘Bloomsbury’ house you’ll ever visit to Charleston and wonderful volunteer staff as usual. Highly recommended
Perfect to visit with Charleston farmhouse for greater understanding and appreciation. Easy to do a fascinating 5k walking circuit to river along to Southease, follow South downs way up to ridge of downs to West and back down through Rodmell
A beautiful tribute to Virginia Woolf. I was amazed to discover that Virginia actually built a writing studio on the side of this house, in which she wrote “A Room Of One’s Own.” I visited on a rainy day unfortunately, but it would be just lovely to lounge on the lawn in the sun if you get lucky with the weather, and imagine her walking by, lost in thought, muttering to herself.nnVirginia and Leonard’s ashes are buried here in the garden, by the pond.nnBe sure to also visit Charleston House, her sister Vanessa’s larger property while you’re in the area.
A nice house in beautiful and extensive grounds. We went on a sunny afternoon and it was quite delightful. It was the second time we had visited and I think I enjoyed it more this time. Park down the road and walk up. There are no refreshments at the house but you could take a picnic and then play bowls. Why not!
