Sadly this cannot be regarded as a 5 star hotel, in fact a Travelodge might provide better cleaning services. We booked this hotel for a very special weekend break - the hotel simply didn’t deliver.nnWe left our room open for cleaning at the time specified by the hotel but nothing happened. On returning to our room at 6PM we were told no housekeeping was available but they could provide us with fresh towels. No proper apologies were given. Later we realised we had no toilet rolls or bottled water but it was too late to get any more. Luckily we had purchased our own toilet rolls and water to take home, so we had a self-catering experience at 5 star prices. We also had to clean out cups and glasses in the sink without soap - not hygienic for someone diagnosed with cancer.nnIf you want a self catering, unhygienic stay at 5 star prices come here, but I would suggest going elsewhere.nnThe management at the hotel has subsequently made the situation worse by accusing us of lying. We very carefully ensured we had made it clear we wanted out room services but the hotel staff were too lazy to check and have lied about the situation. At The Compleat Angler the customer is always wrong!
Lost that loving feelingnnSadly this hotel could be so much better. Obviously a fabulous location and seemingly good standard.nnHowever the Manager Obviously does not have their hand on the pulse. Very poor breakfast considering standard, e.g. poor quality ingredients, orange juice going off, coffee tasted like hadn't been cleaned out properly, no fresh berries etc.nnRoom needs attention to maintenance issues and cleaning generally could be better.nnIt seems like cost cutting gone too far.
I’ve stayed at this hotel before and sadly it seems to be deteriorating. The location and views are the only main attraction for the hotel.nMy room in the ‘newer wing’ in the hotel was far from new and quite dated.nJust some of the issues:nDouble basins - 1 sink the hot tap wouldn’t turn on, the other the cold tap wouldn’t turn on - both taps had thick visible limescale.nThe tiled shelf above the basin was dirty and dusty I used a wet wipe to clean myself.nThe room notes ‘high speed WiFi’ which it most certainly doesn’t have.nThe tv remote batteries needed changing.nThe climate control temperature control pad was flashing an error code so couldn’t get heat.nDoors constantly banging throughout the night.nThin and old towels.nBar service - poor - I was brought the bill when I hadn’t even fished and wanted to order another drink. I asked if the bar was closing as to why the bill was given to me and a ‘no’ was the only answer I received. I was not shown the bill just a credit card machine pointed at me to pay.
This hotel has deteriorated dramatically. It has always been tired and worn but the location and the friendly staff have kept people coming back. It's clean but the carpets are worn, the curtains are torn, the paintwork is peeling and the bathrooms are old, hence the 7.4 rating on Booking.com. We didn't mind because we were always treated so well.nYet in the last 6 months, the staff have changed entirely and during my last two stays I have been treated appallingly. I recognise none of the staff now.nI booked a stay with a standard room for 2 nights at this hotel on 8th & 9th October via an online agent at a decent price of £258. When I arrived at reception, to my horror, the dates were incorrect and were actually for 5th & 6th November. The young person at reception was pleasant but said she was new and didn't know what to do. It took 10 mins or so to find another reception person. In the meantime I called the booking agent who confirmed on speaker that I had tried to book the dates in October and something had gone wrong. They emailed the hotel to ask them to move the dates or refund but they refused. The second reception person said that it was still my fault and they couldn't help me. I was so upset at this. I told them and showed them that I have stayed 18 times in the past year at Macdonald Hotels, mostly the Compleat Angler, and my husband stayed an additional 10 nights on his own for work. She said that they had no availability. I showed her that the booking agent showed availability so she then said they had nothing at the rate I'd paid. There was a long discussion with another 3rd person and then they gave me 3 options. Either find somewhere else to stay and come back and use the November booking I live abroad and had all my luggage in the car with my husband on the way from 5 hours away. Or I could stay somewhere else and send an email to the manager asking for a refund I could tell that this was not going to happen. Or I could stay, they would bring the booking forward, and I had to pay another £160 for the same room, making it £418 instead of £258. I knew that a refund would be denied and it was, officially, a week later by email. I showed them that the online booking agent had the room available for the same two nights for £298, £120 less than they were offering me. She said to me 'Fine, go ahead and book that then. You have already lost £258 so you won't be getting it back.' I'm not sure I remember any reception being this unhelpful and frankly, unpleasant. It was shocking. So I had no choice. I had to pay another £160 or £418 in total. This complete mess took 50 mins as I sat there, miserable.nThis would never have happened with the previous staff. In any case, this makes no business sense. They could have easily moved my booking to the October dates at the same price with little inconvenience to them. I would have appreciated the goodwill and they would have kept me as an ongoing guest. Since moving away from the area I have used Macdonald Hotels 18 times in a year, plus the 10 days my husband stayed. In the 4 years leading up when we lived in the same town, we sent many clients and friends to this hotel. I will never stay at a Macdonald hotel again, ever.nImagine my shock to find that, although they grudgingly moved my booking in the end, I got a cheerful email from them saying that they couldn't cancel the November booking after all and I'm going to be charged another £258. What?? This hotel is a horror story that doesn't end.
Came for afternoon tea. After being seated and 45minutes later still not being served we asked a second time and were told it would be coming in 10 minutes. The sandwiches were second rate, in fact you’d get better at a discount supermarket, the cakes not appetising and the scones rock hard, we could hardly even cut in to one with a knife. We had a voucher from friends which thankfully meant we hadn’t spent the £60 per person but feel the entire experience was not pleasant.nWe certainly will not be returning. The rest of the hotel also looks quite tired, other than the location I couldn’t recommend coming here
