About

London Luton Airport offers both scheduled and charter flights to a wide range of European and UK destinations.

Story

London Luton Airport (LLA) is one of the UK’s largest airports and carried 14.5 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 18.5% on 2015. The airport indirectly employs over 9,400 staff and is a key economic driver for the region.

easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, EL AL, Blue Air, TAROM, SunExpress, Iberia (Air Nostrum), Vueling and Thomas Cook Airlines. The airport’s route network serves more than 130 destinations including services to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The airport is operated and developed by a consortium of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and Ardian, a major European investor.

LLA is currently investing over £110million to transform the airport and increase capacity from 12 million to 18 million passengers per year by 2020. The redevelopment plans will include a complete redesign of the terminal, bringing in new and exciting retail and dining options, and major upgrades to transport links, including better road access to the M1, new car parking facilities, a remodeled bus and coach interchange and improved rail links to Luton Airport Parkway station. In addition, plans for a new £200 million light rail system linking the airport with Luton Airport Parkway station have been announced and are anticipated to be completed by 2020. The project is being delivered by the airport owners, LLAL – a company owned by Luton Borough Council.

The airport is of a good size and frequency of flights but it is a bit old and old-fashioned. The prices in the shops and coffee places are just about right, not too expensive. The staff is friendly and helpful through the security checks. It has no ramps to pop directly in the plane, you have to go down a stairway then to walk to the airplane yourself.

I travel a lot, well not compared to some people, but about 8-10 per year, so I’m a seasoned airport traveller. What I found with Luton airport is, they love processing you at the gate to get on the flight, but keep you waiting in stairwells for about half an hour minimum. For the people who paid to get priority, get amalgamated with the rest who hadn’t, so is a waste of money and defeats the purpose. This is not the airlines, but the airport services who provide the ‘service’. Today I was subjected to so much attitude from airport staff. We normally have suitcases we check in, however this time we had hand luggage and proceeded to the gate with a pushchair. When we got there, the attendant said ‘did you get a tag for the push chair at check in?’, we said no because we’re not checking in baggage! But the look and attitude this person gave us, was if we had committed a murder and I even said why the attitude, did we commit a crime? Yes we made a genuine mistake, but we did not need to be subjected to made feel like we were criminals. All that was required to rectify was a manually written tag......yes a manually written tag and all that fuss. Therefore, the staff at the airport really need to understand that self importance does not provide adequate customer services. I hope this improves, but I hold my breath.....

Not much good to say really. • walking from airport hotels is quicker than getting a bus or a cab due to traffic bottle neck. But walking between 10-13 mins can be a pain when you’re fully loaded and the weather is poor. Once the stopped at the at the bus stop, only to pull away again when I got close. • security can some times lead to queues all the way up to the entrance of the airport • departure gates are overcrowded and I witnessed staff being heavy handed with passengers when the queue would lead up the stairs pushing people out of the way with prams if they didn’t react in time mostly due to not speaking English. • no where to sit generally • immigration inefficient long queues • staff can be friendly but the system that is put in place by the management makes their job hard so it’s hard for them to remain happy. • when you leave you have to take a convoluted route going up and down elevators. Seems strange. Not my favourite airport, in fact it could be the worst. On a plus note the airport links many European cities. It just seems to be poorly managed.

Decent selection of shops. Other than that one of the worst. Pretty far away from any interesting place. No smoking area inside. Boarding area is stupidly crowded. They don't seem to be very organized, after you go 5 stories down using stairs you learn that there was a gate change and instead of boarding plane one of the first you end up one of the last in the line and get climbing back upstairs as a bonus. While annoying boarding line and standing on the stairs is also partly a fault of cheap airlines, but no place to sit in waiting area leaves you no choice except standing in a line with your winter clothes as otherwise (what a surprise) you would freeze while doing the actual boarding outside. To make it worse they manage to put all departing flights next to each other to make the waiting area more hot.

Great airport with great links into London and the surrounding area. Easy transport from and to London. This is going to be improved with the new rail link to the airport. There are busses from Cambridge and other towns/city's direct to the airport. There is a paid drop off zone, but the mid term and long term are free to drop off. When inside the airport there are numerous eateries and places to get alcoholic refreshments. There is also an air side lounge. The new duty free shop brilliant.
