Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Story

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a concert hall in Hope Street, in Liverpool, England. It is the home of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is not the original concert hall on the present site; its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1933 and the present hall was opened in 1939.Original hallThe Liverpool Philharmonic Society was founded in 1840 but initially did not have a permanent concert hall. In 1844 the Liverpool architect John Cunningham was appointed to prepare plans for a hall. The initial requirement was for a "concert room" holding an audience of 1,500 which would cost at least £4,000. Later that year the requirement was increased to a "new concert hall" to accommodate an audience of 2,100 and an orchestra of 250, plus "refreshment and retiring rooms". Subscribers were invited to both buy shares and to purchase seats along the sides of the hall. The foundation stone was laid in 1846 and plans were made for Mendelssohn to write a cantata to be played in his presence at the opening of the hall. Mendelssohn did not live long enough to write the work. The hall cost £30,000 and was opened on 27 August 1849 accompanied by a week long festival. A correspondent for The Times reported that it was "one of the finest and best adapted to music that I ever entered". The correspondent described the interior:

Lovely venue and helpful staff - saw Rumours of Fleetwood Mac here who were absolutely brilliant. Sound resonates perfectly in the auditorium. Easy to get to with lots of places to eat and drink surrounding.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
The main hall is a magnificent venue with beautiful historic art deco design. Seen lots of really good big shows there, and am usually there every year to see Stewart Lee. But I must mention my love for the Music Room too, some great relaxed, intimate performances in this lovely little sister space.
James Martin 2023 tour was great. Fast moving, interesting and funny. Pity about his agressive, sarcastic roadies outside who blocked the only pavement . They need to wait a few mins to load up until the audience has left. It's unsafe to force people into the road. The audience pays your wages boys!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Went to see Bob Odenkirk, known for his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul, for his book launch. This venue was very nice inside even though it looks a bit dated outside. I guess you should never judge a book by its cover! The staff were welcoming and efficient with where we needed to go
Top visit to the hall to watch Psycho get played with a live orchestra. Almost had to give four stars because of the view I had from my seat. The barrier at the bottom of the stairs was right in the eye line, so I had to slouch to see the screen. Obviously it wouldn’t have been a problem if you’re just watching a normal performance.
Absolutely brilliant place to see and hear music. Great range of artistes and genres. Excellent views from all seats. Comfortable seats. Stunning environment. Great bar. Good to have priority booking. Always a pleasure
Went to see the Simon and Garfunkel Story. Fabulous performance. Great seats. No waiting around. Only down side was woman behind me sang every song which spoilt the performance. Maybe a request before the start of show to leave singing to the professionals.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
I heard this place was renovated several years ago now but it's been more like 15 years plus since I was here last A beautiful venue for all smaller event's that don't require the bigger auditoriums, or arena located around the city. A nice relaxing atmosphere. My biggest passion is music, so large or small, & whoever the artist, I will go to see anyone & anything live on stage. Surprisingly & most definitely the youngest there, haha it was my 16 year old niece who asked me to accompany her here tonight, to see Engelbert Humperdinck. Still very charismatic on stage, & engaging with the audience, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening for us both...
Went to watch 10cc on Tuesday night . Great gig . However the night was made superb by the staff who on seeing me struggle after having a knee replacement offered to move me to a much more comfortable seat . Can only thank them . Made my night . Staff so lovelyVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A beatiful and fitting venue for classical concerts. It sounds incredible. Also used a lot for other concerts with a varied range of bands /performers. The bar can get very busy! Staff are. always really helpful. It's a very popular venue so don't delay booking tickets! Parking can be tricky so plan ahead.
