Leighton House Museum

Story

The Leighton House Museum is a museum in the Holland Park district of Kensington and Chelsea in London. The former home of the painter Frederic, Lord Leighton, it has been open to the public since 1929.The houseBuilt for Leighton by the architect and designer George Aitchison, it is a Grade II* listed building. It is noted for its elaborate Orientalist and aesthetic interiors. It is open to the public daily except Tuesdays, and is a companion museum to 18 Stafford Terrace, another Victorian artist's home in Kensington. The first part of the house (2 Holland Park Road, later renumbered as 12) was designed in 1864 by the architect George Aitchison, although Leighton was not granted a lease on the land until April 1866. Building commenced shortly afterwards, and the house, which cost £4500, was ready for occupation by the end of the year. The building is of red Suffolk bricks with Caen Stone dressings in a restrained classical style. The architect extended the building over 30 years; the first phase was only three windows wide. The main room was the first floor studio, facing north, originally 45 by 25 feet, with a large central window to provide plenty of light for painting. There was also a gallery at the east end, and a separate staircase for use by models. The house was extended to the east in 1869–70. Additionally, a major extension was made in 1877–79: the two-storey "Arab Hall," built to house Leighton's collection of tiles collected during visits to the Middle East.

Read about this place in a book so sought it out. Worth the £24 admission for the Arab Hall alone. It is nothing short of sublime. House has an accompanying shop and a nice looking cafe that leads into the garden. Well worth a visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The experience of the building, the art and all the history associated with the site and neighbourhood was so rewarding. The temporary exhibition ”Out Shopping” was interesting and well done. Many beautiful clothes and funny letters as well as informative texts. The museum shop had nice, thoughtful and relevant goods. I would recommend anyone interested in culture to visit Leighton House!
A beautiful, well kept historic house. The interiors, Leighton’s art, two mini exhibitions on fashion and street photography in Paris during the same era and fascinating video on the history of the house and art scene in London/ Holland Park during Leighton’s life. A rich, immersive insight and experience. Free entry with a National Art Pass!
This visit was purely a ‘well I might as well as I’m already here and it’s a good price to see both houses’ kind of situation. I specifically wanted to visit Sambourne House and bought the double ticket just to see what Leighton House had to offer afterwards. I was not disappointed. I’m not into art or artists, I like Victorian houses and nostalgia; however, this place has made me more interested in finding out about local artists and their works. This house is stunning and has such a sense of peace within. The garden was amazing too, I was lucky to visit on a sunny day in October. My only negative was that it was recommended by Sambourne House to have lunch in the cafe at Leighton House. I got there at around 13:00/13:30 and there was absolutely nothing left to eat. I had to make do with a can of Coke and fresh air. I would still go back again despite the lunch setback, I’ll take a sandwich next time!
This house is a hidden gem. Absolutely stunning architecture and amazing artwork including from Constable, Millais, Tintoretto as well as by Leighton himself and many others. We were lucky to visit when the house was super quiet. Don’t listen to the phiilistines who state you can visit in 20 or 30 minutes - you could easily spend the morning here. There were also exhibitions, a cafe and a garden to visit. I recommend strongly.
Amazing architecture inside, probably even better with a guided tour if you don't know about the artist etc. Check out their downstairs learning centre, it has a nice video about the house and area. The garden behind is very cute and relaxing in summer.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. Lord Leighton was a Victorian artist who decorated his house partly in the Arab style. Unfortunately a lot of the original paintings and ornaments were sold but the house has been decorated and furnished as close to the original as possible and has a lovely feel to it. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The Arab room in particular was beautiful.
Spectacular and unique artists house in Holland Park. The Arab Hall is probably the most gorgeous room in London. But every room is stunning. There's really nothing else like it. There's a garden and cafe too.
Such a beautiful museum. You need tickets to enter and there's different price options. Nice architecture inspired by Islamic culture. They do different exhibition which was nice to experience. There's also a garden behind the building which is so prettyyyy.
Had opportunity to be here for a special occasion; recital of German and English songs performed by Roderick Williams Leighton House is a unique house where you can see Leighton’s art.
