L'Etranger

About

L'etranger is a restaurant on Gloucester Road, South Ken. Named for Albert Camus's 1942 work, the restaurant's interior echos the Nobel Prize-winner's minimalist writing style. Gastronomically the menu is a meeting of eastern and western traditions.

Story

L'etranger is an award winning restaurant in Gloucester Road. It was opened on the 18th December 2002 by Owner Ibi Issolah, Executive Chef Jerome Tauvron and General Manager Dorian Pryce.

Jerome has a wealth of experience, having worked in some of the best kitchens and under some of the most respected chefs in the world, including Pierre Gagnaire, Marco Pierre White and Alain Ducasse.

The menu draws on Jerome's love of Japanese cuisine and his Gallic roots. Exotic oriental spices sit amicably alongside traditional French flavours to create a style that is not quite fusion, but something totally unique to L'etranger.

As any Frenchman will tell you, great food needs great wine. To this end, Ibi and our team of sommeliers are constantly searching out great vintages to add to the extensive wine list.

With 1600 bins, we have wines from countries as diverse as Japan and Turkey while maintaining a strong selection with more established wine producing countries like France (naturellement), Italy and the USA.

This care and attention has resulted in L'etranger being showered with awards, including Readers' Favourite Restaurant in the 2009/2010 Good Food Guide and 2nd best wine list in London in The Wine Spectator's ratings for many years now. At the AA Hospitality Awards 2012/13 the we also won the acclaimed title of Britain's Best Selection.

For those looking for a less formal dining experience, our sister restaurant/cocktail bar Meursault is just downstairs.

It is also possible to enjoy the unique taste of L'etranger's cuisine in your own home, through the 'L'etranger at Home' service and 'Beau Manger', our patisserie delivery service.

Excellent food and generous portions - only managed to take pictures of the starters and a dessert platter because we were way too excited when the main course arrived! The staff was attentive and offered their assistance when we were choosing our wine. The spring menu is very tasty and budget friendly for the quality and the amount of food you get. I would wholeheartedly recommend this place to others who are looking for a fine dining experience with an original fusion cuisine.
Great cozy and romantic restaurant if you sit in the better area. The food is yummy and excellent although I would recommend the summer menu compared to the winter menus. But the best part of this place is honestly the wine menu. It's a beautiful collection and offered at reasonable prices. While you can get better food at some other restaurants at this price, the wine menu beats everyone else by a mile. And on top of that, I've never had bad service here which is excellent. Would highly recommend, specially if you're after good wine with your meal
Amazing wine selection and fantastic food. Service and atmosphere is exceptional. Top quality experience...
The food was okay. Very well cooked but my main, the sea bass, lacked flavour and was quite bland. The service was good. Once we explained that we had to go to a show in an hour their service was very prompt with the mains ready as soon as we'd finished the starters. I'll probably go back when in the area with time for the tasting menu but won't be in a rush to do so.
I loved this restaurant for it's French/Japanese fusion menus and great wine, and have had some magical meals here. But something has changed, the food was good, but the spark was missing, no clever tastes, no wow, no amazing. The wine I ordered I noticed was from NakedWines, which I'm a member, so again the magic of a fine wine gone. P.S the wine is £7.80 on nakedwines... the disappointment increases! Sadly I dont think we'll go again
Simply outstanding! Dined with my partner and I don't even remember mentioning that it was our Anniversary yet the staff made our night one that we will never forget. Service was spot on and not obtrusive and they even brought us an special dessert to celebrate our evening. The wine list is so impressive but not as impressive as the knowledgable sommelier team who made the perfect recomendations for the food we had chosen. The food...Wow. We left
Great! If you like racial profiling, bad service and horrible chewy steak. Charged us for a whole bottle of evian when we had half a glass. Gave us the worst table covered with a film of dust next to the door with a horrible draft and creaking floorboards. Waiter was condescending and disinterested - for the price we paid I'd have had better service in Burger King or Nandos. Also there's nothing Japanese about this restaurant at all, barely sticking to the French theme. Money and time I'll never get back
I visited this restaurant two times this past week and both visits were fantastic. The Scottish scallop appetizer was heavenly. And the Alaskan Black Cod was the best…even better than Nobu. The service and staff was first class and the sommelier was quite knowledgeable. I will definitely return on my next visit to London.
Dined by myself and was pleasantly surprised. Sea bass is perfectly cooked and gyoza touch balanced the dish to perfection. Staff extremely polite and happy. Loved my visit!
Really amazing Asian-French fusion food which comes together like 1+1 equalling 3! Try the foie gras multiple ways and the kobe beef sushi - completely to die for. The service is equally great and the sommelier is both knowledgeable and friendly. Make sure you have reservations as the place is small and cozy, but because it´s a bit tucked away on Gloucester Road you can usually get lucky.
