About

The Judge's Lodging Museum, Presteigne

Story

Visit us and you will be in for a treat, for this award-winning historic judge’s accommodation and court offers a most unusual journey back in time. Wander through the judge’s private apartments and make yourself at home, for The Judge’s Lodging is an historic house with a difference – you can touch! You can lie on the beds, read the judge’s books and even pump water in the kitchen. Below stairs there is the full range of servants’ rooms to explore, with kitchens, sleeping quarters and workrooms; a whole gaslit world to discover. The tour is finished by a trip to the vast echoing courtroom, where you are haunted by the echoes of trials long since concluded. You are guided through this Victorian world by an eavesdropping’ audiotour featuring the voice of actor Robert Hardy.

If you have children to entertain, you don’t have to worry about being told off every time they move, because the building is family-friendly. They have their own activities and guidebook to help them explore … and 2011 is a perfect time for them to experience all this as the museum has just made its admission for children even cheaper!

Oh, and although our listed Opening Hours show that we are closed on Mondays, we make an exception for Bank Holiday Mondays, so if you are having a break during one of the long weekends please call in to see us!

Fascinating ... our second visit. We arrived shortly after opening time and had the whole place to ourselves most of the time. Plenty to see. The audio tour was informative and entertaining. Well worth a visit. £9.95 each is pretty reasonable as it gives entry for a full 12 months. Parking is available a few yards from the entrance.
Beautiful building, lots of history contained within. Takes you back to a different time. There is a court room here. You are given individual recorders that narrate the story of members of staff. Includes a wonderful below stairs set up. Has a little tea room with wonderful homemade cakes to enjoy.nVolunteers are very friendly & helpful.nRecommended
A truly original immersive experience. The fabulous audio guide takes you through each room at your own pace bringing everything to life with character narrations depicting how life was in the mid 1800s. Complete with the smell of oil lamps burning and the flicker of gas lighting you get the sense this living museum really is full of everything that was in situ 150 years ago. An underlying storyline of a local felon from back-in-the-day helps round off your experience of the reason this building exists. The team keeping all of this going were great. We rounded off our visit in the tea room which offers a terrific selection of leaf teas, ground coffees and delicious cake including bara brith.
A fantastic historical place of interest. Audio device for a guided tour is a must. Lots of interesting rooms, furniture etc to see.
Probably the best museum I've visited. Excellent free audio guide. They've tried to retain as much of the original 1860s furnishings even down to gas lighting. Must see!
