never trust this shop with your bike he will remove all the good stuff then lie Was not safe or road worthy after he got his hands on it so never got the bike back but now has it for sale on his website. i would be very careful buying or selling with this shop
Highly recommended. Have used John’s Cycles to work on various MTBs and my road bike over the past few years when I’ve not had the time or skill and they have always been spot on, especially for things like wheel building/truing, gears and hydraulic brakes I’ll happily do those on my motorcycles, but bicycle brakes just don’t get on with me. A few little unknown/unforeseen niggles have raised their heads from time to time, as with anything car/bike/building related, but I’ve always found them really helpful in talking me through the various options and costs. They’re not my nearest bike shop by a fair distance, but I’ll keep going back.
John's cycles and John himself are outstanding. Don't listen to the bad reviews, there are always moaners on the Internet. But a shop with near 5 stars on avg is worth travelling to. My job wasn't easy - a very unusual electric handbike called a Triride had let us down and John was fantastic from start to finish, going above and beyond in getting it fixed whilst we waited.
Has always been very helpful when my bike’s broken - happy to fix a lot of things there and then Fair prices + have got back bike quickly when needed work done
I write this with a heavy heart, as I do my best to support local/independent businesses. In this case, it’s not even that local, and I’ve quite literally gone out of my way to support this business – so I’m disappointed in the way things have played out. John or his staff have worked on my bike on two separate occasions now. Both times my bike failed on its first outing thereafter – and both times, the failure was in the exact area that had been worked on. On the first occasion, it was just a case of reattaching/securing the crank that fell off mid-ride. Which brings me to the second. I brought my bike in for a service. At the time I dropped it off, John was very keen to make sure that we were agreed on what work needed to be done and what the cost would be around £200. Amongst other things, we agreed the bike needed new brake pads on the front wheel and also a new disk. John mentioned that I ought not to have let the pads run so low and it was this that had caused additional wear on the disk. Fair enough. Within a minute of the start of my first outing after the service, the front brake started to squeak. Over the next 15 minutes, the squeak got worse, and the brake started to fail completely. So I took the bike back. John told me that the seal around the callipers had failed and that this must have been my fault, because I’d let the brake pads run so low. He then told me that I’d have to pay £80 for a whole new brake system – to include, amongst other things, another new disk and another set of new pads in addition to the ones I’d just paid for in the service. At the time, I was quite shocked, but took what he said at face value, and I left the bike with him again. But the more I thought about it, the more the situation bothered me. So when I went to pick up the bike and was asked to pay, I told him that, if he insisted, I would pay what he was asking, but that I really wasn’t happy about it. Not only was John steadfast in his position, he also pointed out that I’d wanted a bargain service in the first place. This struck me as a rather odd thing to say. At the time, we agreed not to include de-greasing the drivetrain in the service, as I was happy to do that myself, but I paid the full asking price for the work that was agreed – and there certainly was no bargain at my end of the equation. He also told me that I was unlucky that this had happened so soon after he’d worked on the brakes and that this was just a coincidence. He compared it to someone getting a puncture as soon as they’ve had their tyre replaced. I’m not happy, because it’s quite obvious that this was not a coincidence at all and that the problem must have existed when the bike left the shop from its service. You can’t compare this to getting a puncture. John said that he had tested the brakes at the end of the service and that there was nothing wrong with them, but it’s clear that he can’t have tested them thoroughly enough, because if he had, then the problem would have been clear – and all the collateral damage from the leaking fluid could have been avoided. John told me that, in the past, he used to give the benefit of doubt to people in a situation like this, but that he doesn’t do that anymore. He didn’t even want to agree to splitting the cost – or doing the work at cost. I can’t speak to the experiences John might have had in the past, but such an unyielding policy isn’t good business. The customer isn’t always wrong. It’s bad enough that I had to cover the additional cost of replacing all of the parts for a second time!, and to drive there and back another two times to drop off the bike and to pick it up again, but that John should profit from it too, really bothers me. I regret having to leave this review, but I think it’s a fair review and I hope John will reconsider his policy in light of it. Addendum: Apology and partial refund gratefully accepted. I've upped my review by a couple of stars to reflect this. Don’t agree with a couple of your other comments, but we’ll have to agree to disagree. With best wishes…
Amazing service from both John and Izzy. Walked in this morning and the bike was straight up on the stand, gears tweaked, wheel off and trued, bottom bracket and pedals changed. In and out in under 30 mins. Very rare to come across service like this, so without doubt I'd recommend Johns Cycles to anyone who can get there. Excellent job John and Izzy.
The prices that are charged in this place are absolutely ridiculous. The work is made in rush and the attitude of owner is very bad, not only that i was underestimated and my knowledge but the audacity to charge for simple jobs prices like you service a car. I definitely think is a situation of power and taking advantage of the fact is the only bicycle shop in the area so people are quite stuck. It’s obviously the volume of work is over the capacity of this shop and the frustration can be felt in prices, attitude, atmosphere, customer service. I totally not recommend, and if you stuck try to ask for second opinion even if is a bit further it may save you the need to deal with negative attitude and frustration.
First time bringing my bike to John's. Needed tyres and other little niggles addressed before the winter commute season. He created time for me and did the work there and then. John called the next morning to check up on me... What a nice touch Only constructive point would be to keep an eye on prices of parts, to remain competitive. I have no qualms recommending John's cycles to others, largely for the kind, transparent, honest and pleasant conduct of John himself. I would love to have him work on my bike again...
John and the team are fantastic. They're always willing to help cyclists whatever the repair. He also sells great, affordable bikes that come with a guarantee 5*****
