In December my car needed new rear brake pads, when I took it to JJ Autos he advised me that I also needed new disks too. Having received a quick service and fair price for these jobs I booked both of my cars in for their MOT’s at the end of January.
The first car passed its MOT with a slight blow on the exhaust. While there I told John the cars heating blower was not working, he looked at this while I waited and advised the problem was something to do with the resistor. As I had to return to work I left it with him as well as the second car for its MOT.
A few hours later I got a call to say he’d managed to fix the heating, I was also told that if the heating system failed again the resistor needed was not expensive at around £30-40 and he would not charge me to fit it. This lead me to believe I was dealing with an honest, reliable mechanic which are often hard to find.
Unfortunately the second car failed its MOT, the hand break was not working correctly and I was advised they could possibly free up the calliper to rectify the problem. John explained they were busy and could take care of it the following week. The work already completed (two Mots’, a new down pipe on the exhaust and the heating fixed) had been charged at the reasonable cost of £190 cash. So, having received a satisfactory service so far, I booked it in to have the work done on the handbrake.
The day the car was due at garage it wouldn’t start. I phoned john to inform of the situation, he said it wasn’t a problem and told me to get it there when I could. He even said if I got stuck they could possibly pick it up as it was probably because the battery was cold. Again, I thought what an honest, reliable mechanic with great customer service.
The next morning the heating stopped working on my wife’s car again So I called John about this and also asked about my car that I had left with him to fix the handbrake. He informed me that it was definitely just the battery that needed replacing but couldn’t free up calliper and the cost of both would be £235. I thought this was a fair price and told him to go ahead with the work. I asked again to confirm the price for the heating part and was told it would be £150-£170. This is not the price he had previously quoted. As this was far more than I expected I said I might have to leave it until the end of the month when I next get paid.
Later the same day I arrived to collect my car. I chose to pay for the works carried out to my car by card. John was unhappy with my method of payment and insisted I had agreed to pay with cash, this had not been agreed and I had not stated how I planned to pay for the works to be done. Not happy by this John went off with his calculator and returned with an increased price of £294.
After reluctantly paying the inflated price for a battery and calliper I again brought up about the heating resistor, again I was told about £150. I disagreed with the price and told him I could have the part delivered for £19.99 to which he said if I got the part he would fit it for £40. By this point I felt John was being dishonest and trying to make extra money off me. With this in mind I decided to ring other companies to get a quote for the same work, Kwik fit of all places was £25 cheaper for the same work and Potters Garage in the high street £55 cheaper! After already paying more than the agreed price for works so far and being quoted an inflated price for the heating I decided not to use JJ Autos again.
Just one week later and the new battery John fitted on my car is dead. It turns out the battery was never the problem, in fact the problem it is the alternator. I would expect an experienced mechanic to have checked the alternator and know the difference between these problems. It also turns out the problem with the heating system in my wife’s car was nothing to do with the resistor.
After paying out nearly £500 in total for both cars, I have been left with two undrivable cars. I would strongly advise you do not take your car here.

I continually use this garage. I have been living in this area for years and they are the best around here by far. Every time I need any work carried out, they have me back on the road as soon as they possibly can. They are very efficient and trustworthy. This is reassuring, as I don't know much about cars myself. There's also the option to have MOT test done while I wait, or leave it with them. I highly recommend!
