Thank you Highgate Cemetery for an absolutely amazing day out! I've wanted to visit ever since I read 'Ink Black Heart' by Robert Galbraith, but little did I know that I'd leave with so much more!nnFirstly, highly recommend you do the guided tour! You learn so much about the history of the cemetery itself as well as its interesting occupants. Julia our guide was simply amazing!!! She was so knowledgeable, articulate, passionate and oh so funny! You really elevated the experience, so thank you very much! Money well spent!nnSpent 4 hours perusing both the West and East Cemeteries and the time just flew by I loved it so much!! The West is particularly spectacular boasting the Circle of Lebanon, the Terrace Catacombs, and Egyptian Avenue to name a few.nnIt is such a tranquil, beautiful, gothic Victorian Cemetery. Don't forget to spend some time reading the gravestones to reveal their secrets, from interesting deaths, to the most opulent mausoleums! A MUST SEE!!
Visiting Highgate Cemetery was an unforgettable experience, steeped in history, beauty, and a touch of mystery. The cemetery is divided into two parts, the East and the West, each offering its own unique charm and a glimpse into London's past.nnThe highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the guided tour, led by Nigel, whose expertise and enthusiasm brought the cemetery to life. Nigel was an excellent guide, blending his extensive knowledge with engaging storytelling. His passion for the history and the notable figures interred at Highgate was evident, and it made the tour both educational and deeply enjoyable.nnHighgate Cemetery is home to the graves of many prominent figures, including Karl Marx, George Eliot, and Douglas Adams. Nigel’s insightful anecdotes about these individuals, along with lesser-known but equally fascinating residents, provided a rich tapestry of the cemetery’s historical significance.nnThe West Cemetery, with its gothic architecture and the famous Egyptian Avenue, was particularly enchanting. Nigel’s detailed explanations of the symbolism and design elements added depth to our appreciation of the site. He also shared intriguing stories
Spent a great 3 hours here. I hadn't intended on a guided tour but arrived 2 minutes before one started, so I went for it. Best £8.00 I've spent in ages. The entrance fee is £10 and the extra for the tour is a bargain. Steven, our guide, was so knowledgeable. We, actually, over ran by 30 minutes because he had so much to tell us. He kept our attention from beginning to end.nIt is such a beautiful place. Highly recommended
Great way to spend a day in London! Gotta be honest, my initial reason for wanting to visit the cemetery was my interest in the Highgate Vampire story, but I quickly learned it's the least interesting thing about the place!nnThe cemetery is full of history and beautiful and unique tombstones. Worth getting the tour, too - I bought a ticket and tagged along to one that was starting just as I arrived. Julia, the tour guide, was highly knowledgeable and entertaining while still very respectful of the deceased.nnThere is an entrance fee, but as it funds the upkeep of this wonderful slice of history I think it's 10 pounds well spent.
We had the most amazing tour here. Peter Mills was an incredible guide/historian who went above and beyond to show us the best parts of the cemetery. I would highly recommend this fascinating place full of many wonders. Was surprised to find out that the guides are actually volunteers who carry out their tours full of passion. We will definitely be returning to this magnificent place. The Black Cab Tours www.theblackcabtours.co.uk couldn’t do enough for us. We had a great day out.
