HEYWOOD HILL
New & Rare Books, Literary Services & Private Libraries

Story

The Shop

Situated on two floors of a Georgian townhouse, Heywood Hill sells new, old and antiquarian books as well as producing catalogues on numerous themes. The emphasis remains literature, history, architecture, biography and travel as well as keeping a children's department well-stocked with the best new and classic titles.

First and foremost our shop is about the enjoyment of books. We are always interested in which books or writers an individual customer has most enjoyed. The more we get to know someone and their reading tastes the more tailored our service then becomes, and the more we can help customers discover something unexpected or perfectly suited to them.

Our stock is a mix of old, new and antiquarian books. As our premises are small every title must justify its place on our shelves. Generations of writers, readers and collectors have trusted our booksellers who offer instant, knowledgeable advice on what to read, what to give and just as importantly what to avoid.

We treat all our customers as friends of our shop and we are continually looking to find new ways to be of use to them, whether readers or collectors. Our literary adventures and library building services have been designed with the friends of Heywood Hill in mind.

Was looking forward to coming here for the first time in 20 years amd eas anxious since I knew so much had changed. Unfortunately, the current lot include very stuck up staff that fuss about in groups in what is quite frankly the smallest bookshop salesfloor in London as though they're the busiest people ever - a big turn off frankly. In reality, they seem lucky to have 1 or 2 people in the store at one time. Molly served me and was extremely scatty, and unprofessional - openly complaining about the management to 2 colleagues in front of me whilst I browsed. I have a friend who knows the proprietor Nicky Dunne and am considering writing in seperately to let him know of this. I won't be running back though for another shopping experience.
We came to this bookstore specifically because we had a book-of-the-month subscription from the USA. They were entirely kind and accomodating. A great experience!
A fantastic book shop offering first class customer service. Louisa helped me organise some author signed books which were then dispatched to Canada. All from my desk in Cheshire! I cant wait to pay them a visit when I'm next in town.
Love this bookshop in London!! It is the best. My favourite. I used to work right next door in the offices at 7 Curzon St. This was always my neigbourhood when in London. I bought a few books at Heywood Hill Ltd. and especially the ones by Nancy Mitford who worked there in the 1940s. Lovely bookshop and very polite and helpful staff. Louisa was very kind and set aside a book for me that is being brought back to Buenos Aires this weekend.
Great independent bookstore, loved the vibe and bought a new book. Got a free bookmark! Can’t complain. Lucky to have shops like this
Employees are very educated and taught us so much about bindings. Very well rounded store. We were at Shakespeare and co. and were told to stop in here while visiting london. We weren't disappointed :
Glorious bookshop with a plethora of unique, thoughtfully selected books. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful. Looking forward to ordering from them online the downside to living in Aus!!
Heywood Hill is a bookshop at 10 Curzon Street in the Mayfair district of London. The shop was opened by George Heywood Hill on 3 August 1936, with the help of Lady Anne Gathorne-Hardy, who would later become his wife. For the last three years of the Second World War, while George Heywood Hill was in the Army, Lady Anne ran the shop with the assistance of the novelist Nancy Mitford. In 1991, the shop was bought by Nancy Mitford's brother-in-law, Andrew Cavendish, 11th Duke of Devonshire. As of 2016, the store is owned by Peregrine Cavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire, and has been managed by his son-in-law, Nicky Dunne since 2011. The store specialises in rare books and collections of books, and has a service of assembling and delivering bespoke libraries for customers.
Lovely bookshop in the heart of Mayfair. Nice selection
I wish I'd had more time to browse because it's an interesting shop, plenty of variety.
