Story

Schott first established a London presence in 1835 in St James’s, moving to 159 Regent Street before settling at 48 Great Marlborough Street in 1908. This continuity and sense of tradition is shared with our founding company in Mainz, which still occupies the original building of its inception in 1770, the year of Beethoven’s birth.

Adam, son of the founder, Bernhard Schott, established the London offices, importing and selling editions and sheet music. In 1853 Schott London began publishing in its own right, and a royal warrant was granted in 1879. Charles Volkert became manager in 1881, expanding the company and the premises. He knew the famous composers of the day including Brahms, Gounod, Liszt, Von Bulow, and especially Wagner, who was by this time published by Schott Music GmbH & Co. Volkert was later one of the founders of the Performing Rights Society in 1914.

When 48 Great Marlborough St was acquired in 1908, a warehouse was built in the garden of this 18th Century house for the trade and export departments. Schott was publishing some of Elgar's early salon pieces, including Salut d'Amour, and began its first major composer relationship, with Percy Grainger.

Today the London centre is one of the international offices of Schott Music. Our partnership with Schott Music London means that 48 Great Marlborough Street offers the widest range of music across all genres, as well as practice rooms and a showroom where the latest publications of all the leading publishers can be perused and sampled.

Schott also owns other distinguished and popular brands, including the Eulenburg edition. Eulenburg’s miniature scores catalogue is unrivalled in its comprehensive range, encompassing over 1,200 titles of chamber, orchestral, operatic and choral works. Reliability, high production values and customer-focus across every aspect of music publishing are the hallmarks of Schott Music, which now has centres in 9 countries. Music for all - from the youngest child and the enthusiastic amateur to the professional musician and international soloist - is at the heart of the Schott Music catalogue.

Schott Music Shop is an absolute gem for musicians in London. Their selection of scores for all solo instruments and arrangements for all manner of ensembles one can think of is fantastic, and they also offer a large range of books on music and condensed study scores. As a pianist, I’ve always been able to find exactly what I need on the same day though I know they can order items in very quickly if something isn’t in stock. All musical periods and styles are very well stocked; luckily for me, I always find the Baroque period for solo keyboard instruments to be particularly well represented. I recently returned after a long break to use the practice rooms, I didn’t book in advance and was able to book a piano as a walk-in - this has never been an issue before as they have a large number of rooms although it’s probably advised to book in advance where possible - and I was reminded why I used to visit so regularly. The pianos available for practice are of excellent quality, with a great selection of both upright and grand pianos, all kept in perfect condition and tuned to the highest standard. There are framed artefacts on the walls of the practice rooms, which may seem insignificant to some, but I really appreciate the original manuscripts Bartók on my most recent visit and some letters authored by Glenn Gould. The practice rooms themselves are well equipped with plenty of charging points and fans for ventilation, and the restrooms are always clean. While the soundproofing is adequate, there’s no need to feel self-conscious as the shop has a welcoming, supportive atmosphere for musicians of all abilities—completely free of the snobbery you might encounter at other similar establishments in the city. The rates per hour for the practice rooms are competitive and completely reasonable given the quality of the facilities and pianos. For anyone who loves music, Schott Music Shop is a treasure. It’s the best place in London for scores, music literature, and study materials, and it’s also my favourite spot for piano practice. I can’t recommend it enough! I look forward to my next visit.
Lovely quaint store located in the heart of London. Gentleman that served me was such a warm and friendly person and helped me with printing the correct music sheets for my fiancé whom is a keyboard player. Best London Underground station to get to this store is Oxford Circus, it’s only a five minute walk from there. I’ve taken a business card home with me and I look forward to using this store again when back in London.
Good selection of manuscript paper, which is why I go here. Very helpful staff and lovely, organized shop.
Have shopped here twice and it is well resourced. The staff are pleasant and they have practice rooms. If you want sheet music/albums etc, it's worth a visit.
This shop is a truly wonderful. I used one of the practice rooms downstairs thankfully soundproofed to prepare for a piece I was playing later in the day. The staff were friendly, extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
Great store. Good prices on sheet music, found some great Christmas music for my less advanced piano students. They have rooms downstairs to rent for rehearsals & teaching. The practise pods are sound proof but be warned that the rehearsal rooms are not. You hear everything. Feels like I was back at school! Lovely people working there willing to help & answer questions. Easy walk from Oxford Circus tube stop.
Tidy shop and good collection of records, musical notes. The main features the shop few chairs to sit and read and a downstairs area to practice
Super helpful staff. Has a cool practice space. Great for that after work practice. Wide range of music and they can buy it in and post it to you if they don't have it in stock. Can't stress how helpful the staff were in an era of music shops going on line.
Great for sheet music. I was expecting a bit more from the “books about music” section.
Huge selection. Great space beneath for music lessons.
