The meat is really well priced and the gentleman are really helpful with cooking tips! I went in for a shoulder of lamb and ended up with a beef shin also. The lamb fell apart on the plate it was so tender. Cannot recommend highly enough, lovely Sunday ritual!
We are local to the neighbourhood and frequent Hennessy as our local butchers. We are a household that traditionally keeps organic, locally sourced to ensure quality in our produce. Hennessy certainly offers quality meat! They are one of the only establishments to offer 100% grass-fed beef. Specifically the pork and eggs are fresh, free-range and delicious.
The meat I've bought so far has always tasted great. The prices are pretty decent too. if you're lucky enough to be able to spend a little more than in the supermarket, then it's worth visiting this butcher's. In some cases, the meat worked out about the same as buying it in a supermarket but with less packaging and getting to talk to someone who knows what they're talking about when it comes to what to choose... as well as the taste!
Have been coming here every week now for several years. They're a great family butcher, and the son now doing most of the work really knows his stuff - he's great with cooking tips and preparing cuts for different methods of cooking. The product is always, without exception, superb. There are several supermarkets nearby, and numerous high quality pre-packaged shops like Wholefoods or Bagley & Sage. Hennessey's is consistently better.
Great produce - really friendly and helpful
I sometimes buy chicken for my chicken soup which is always fresh and tastes delicious. Most often I buy eggs they sell there. They're a real treat if compared to what you get at supermarkets.
Hennessy's is a great independent family butcher. There is nothing fancy about the shop, simply sells good quality meat, not overpriced. They sell the fabulous Sutton chickens.
The steak I was given had mould and a foul smell and the person handling the meats hands were filthy. I gave this place a second chance mainly out of laziness to walk to other shops and tried their sausages which were completely tasteless and very expensive. Will never try again. Baffles me how they are still in business when a ginger pig is so close
We go to Hennessy often but I am very angry about my experience there yesterday. I asked the white-haired, portly butcher for 450g of very thinly sliced pork escalopes. He disappeared into the back room and when he returned proceeded to slice the meat in 1 cm thick slices. Please, I reminded him, I would like very thin slices. He replied he’d slice them the way he wanted and give them a pounding there after. He then cut off some of the fat leaving quite a bit on, then pounded them once and handed them over. By this time I was very annoyed but didn’t say anything in the shop. There’s nothing more frustrating than being ignored by someone who thinks they know better and couldn’t be bothered to listen to what the customer wants. Well, I say to this man, maybe it’s time to retire. If I do choose to go in again, I’ll make sure I’m served by the younger staff members.
So inspired to make beef bone broth, I thought of buying bones from what I thought is a good local butcher. I then headed straight to this shop with my son and asked how I can get it, the seller said “We only give it away to our customers. It’s free, but you have to buy something.” Then I thought he must misunderstood, as I was originally thinking of buying it. So I agreed that I’ll buy any meat from them. He said I can buy 4 chicken wings to have the bone, which, he said it’s totally free anyway. I came back the following day and the colleague of the bulky guy attended to me instead. I told him I wanted to buy 6-7 chicken wings, he weighed it and told me the price. I then asked I have inquired yesterday about the bone, only to see the man I’ve spoken to yesterday watching by, seated on his usual corner of the store. He said that what I bought wasn’t enough for me to get the bone. So I asked what is the minimum amount I should buy. He then answered snappily that “We’re not taking the mick of giving you a bone and you only bought so little from our shop!” This really gave me a surprise. So I answered back, “that is why I was asking you what is the minimum amount of what I should buy. You shouldn’t talk to your customers like that and I wasn’t taking the mick. I was asking you nicely!” His colleague then added, “You’re not our customer, go ask in Waitrose or Sainsbury’s instead!”. So exasperated, I answered back that, no, I am not your customer. Thank you!! What an appalling way of dealing with potential customers. Karma is going to bite back...SO RUDE!!
