We took a steam/diesel train from Grismont to Pickering for a 2 year olds first main train journey! What a treat this was.. she totally loved it! She was so excited all the way to be on a train and to go through the amazing English countryside in an old carriage was a great experience! I have not seen her happier which makes both of us so happy to see her happy! The conductirs were brilliant! All very friendly and made her laugh and talked to her as they went past. The train driver waved to us.. whole experience was perfect! Cannot thank the staff there enough and would recommend everyone do it if you have a young child. A shame the steam engine was replaced by a diesel one.. but not a biggie! We were advised this maybe the case before to went. Awesome!
Technically two stations. There is the NYMR station and the Norther Rail service. This is a tidy little station with around 5 trains each way by Northern and several from Whitby to Pickering run by the NYMR. Both lines are stunningly picturesque and are definitely worth travelling in. It's your choice, normal commuter train or steam / heritage diesel train! The NYMR platform.has a cafe, shop and loos. The Northern rail one has....a shelter!
Fantastic trip on the Sir Nigel Gresley steam train from Grosmont to Pickering return. Superb and well worth the price.
With the connection to the mainline, the NYMR is not a line running from nowhere to somewhere. Car park is of a reasonable size to accommodate both NYMR and mainline users, charged at £5 for the whole day, it is the only option on the pay and display options. I was disappointed to find by late afternoon, apart from the gift shop and those involved with the running of trains, the station is deserted of customer service related staff. I tried the gift shop to enquire about a pre booking following the cut backs of service in response to the weather, but the gentleman in the shop was unable to help, as he did not have a computer. I was advised to try the ticket office, but I found this deserted of staff, with roller shutter down at 4pm. Using the toilets at Grosmont, is not a pleasant expierence, they are let down by an ever-present stick of excitement. Refreshments are served at the ever more marked up price found on the NYMR, leaving hungry passengers over a barrel, as options for Refreshments at Grosmont is limited at best.
Lovely little village ,picturesque with a lovely church too. We did a walk in a circle around the village which took a couple of hours , went over a narrow foot bridge over a ford. Watched a four by four with a sheep trailer cross over. We were fascinated, there's nothing like that where we live. The views of the countryside are amazing
Parked in the car park just as you enter the village. Start point for our walk today. Plenty of people enjoying the sunshine and train ride.
Brilliant Helpful volunteers. Always a STEAM Engine or two around. In the Engine sheds 6 being attended to. A train to Whitby pulled in and another pulled out to Pickering.
Great little village in the Yorkshire Moors. Very picturesque and quaint, it's like going back in time. It's a 'must see' if in the area. There's also an engine workshop next to the line where you can see volunteers working to restore old steam trains, very interesting.
A lovely station with plenty going on. There's always something to see while waiting for your train. Plenty of helpful staff who can usually either answer any questions you may have, or point you in the direction of someone who can!
A great little station with working engine sheds which be viewed and enjoyed.
