Great St Mary's Church

About

Great St Mary's, the University Church, is the heart of Cambridge. An active Christian community for 800 years, our Tower has the best views in Cambridge!

Story

Great St Mary’s has maintained its witness to the faith of Christ for many centuries. It has carried out this mission in many ways as a parish church in the diocese of Ely, as the Church of the University of Cambridge, as a place of prayer and celebration for all the citizens of Cambridge.
Great St Mary's is a community which worships on Sundays and through the week, with a strong musical tradition and a lively programme of activities for all ages including special activities for children. A wide variety of preachers are invited to services and special events.
The church is also a centre of civic services and events, concerts and exhibitions. For information on how to get baptised, or married at Great St Mary’s, please visit our website.
Great St Mary's has the only ring of twelve bells in the county, on which the ‘Westminister chimes’ of Big Ben were composed and first rung. The pulpit is on rails so that it can be moved to a central position for major sermons and the church has two organs.
The parish is known as St Mary the Great with St Michael, Cambridge, and we also worship in the chapel of the Michaelhouse Centre in the historic St Michael’s Church just 50 yards along Trinity Street.

The cost to go up the tower in very small and the view is terrific. My children were a little scared coming down the narrow stairwell. The status are quite narrow and don't allow for up and down at the same time, but everyone seemed to understand this and positioned themselves to ensure safe travel.

The view from the rooftop is really stunning! You can overlook the whole Cambridge and it definitely worth paying a visit. The stairway is narrow with high steps (100+ steps). So, you may not wanna try going up if you are not physically fit.😂

Visited Great St Mary's Church in the heart of the beautiful Cambridge today. The church is stunning, as are the views from the tower (great value at £4). The staff were very friendly and welcoming. However I was disappointed when I went to the back of the church and noticed a corner of, what can only be described as rubbish, piled up in the pews. This unsightly mess has tried to be cover but a big let down for the church.

It’s a beautiful church and got a awesome view of Cambridge from its rooftop. To get the view one has to buy a ticket to enter rooftop, it’s around 5 pounds for a ticket. It’s a very narrow passage to reach the rooftop but it’s worth the money during evenings it will be awesome to watch the sunset from rooftop.

Amazing church in the centre of Cambridge, next to King’s College. Views from the top are worth the climb, narrow stairs with bidirectional traffic, can be tricky, you have been warned!
