Grand Western Canal Country Park

About

The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Local Nature Reserve meanders through beautiful mid-Devon countryside and quiet villages

Story

The Grand Western Canal Country Park meanders through eleven and a quarter miles of beautiful mid-Devon countryside between Tiverton and Lowdwells (near the Somerset border).

Declared a Country Park in 1971 and a Local Nature Reserve in 2005, the canal is a wonderfully relaxing place for a peaceful walk or cycle ride along the towpath, or even take a ride onboard the much-loved horse-drawn barge that has been taking passengers for trips along the canal since 1974.

The abundance of wildlife and scenic landscape that characterise the Canal today make it a great place to enjoy walking, cycling, boating, fishing and picnics.

Went here yesterday on 17th August with a group of 11 of us, to enjoy an outing with several Birthdays, together. Having a horse drawn barge experience was all part of that too. A wonderful gentle step out of the rat race moment to enjoy too.nnThe facilities and service across the site are great and personable. There are floating cafe barges, tea rooms, a retail/souvenir shop, a visitor centre and toilet facilities, as well as the large horse drawn barge to take in.nnAll great and the actual ride experience is serene and pleasant...with the bar run by the welcoming Sue on the barge is marvellous too.
Little gem in Tiverton. All facilities are very clean. Whl chair access to all parts of the facilities. Canal boat for small snacks n tea/coffee . Very peaceful and the walks are beautiful. Lovely place to sit n read. Horse drawn canal boat available.
What a lovely little part of the canal to visit . Well kept and has a small visitors information area which has all the canal history . 2 areas where beverages can be bought one right on the canal . Wheelchair friendly for access . Car parking fees reasonable and a few disabled spaces . Worth a visit
We had a lovely trip on a barge pulled by a shire horse. The captain gave a very good commentary, he even made the health and safety amusing. They had a well stocked bar which also served tea, coffee, soft drinks and cake and biscuits. They catered for everyone really. There was also a lovely thatched cottage tearoom on site. This was a really enjoyable afternoon. Highly recommended.
Loved this place. Great for adults and even better for children. Loads to see and do!
