Fantastic hiking to be had here, with wonderful scenic views of Gortin Glen. Be warned relatively good fitness is I think a prerequisite to being able to fully enjoy the rather long trails, which will require navigating some pretty steep inclines. I can't emphasize enough how beautifully picturesque the views from the top truly are. Good sized car park and toilets are on-site. Large play park for the kiddies too.
This forest is now run by Omagh Council and they have spent over £20000 fixing this place up. The cafe and toilets have been renovated, Large new childrens play park, a few downhill mountain bike trails and its now free entry, free parking. When I came here in September, the cafe wasn't open. Probably just weekends when off season, but no times signed posted. Only fault is that now Dogs have to be kept on a lead, but the council don't own this forest, just long term lease, a certain part of it so walk about 20 mins away from the main carpark on any of the walks and a well behaved dog of its lead should be a problem. I did the long walk to the Carn which is about 4 miles from the carpark and past sevial pups happily of their lead. Playground: Brand new fenced off mordern play ground with lots of climbing Restrooms: Newly refurbished. Unusualy the male toilets now only has 1 high urinal, 1 low urinal but 6 toilet cubicles and about 5 sinks. Disable toilets are separate. Picnic area: They have a large barbecue type half building. Stone wall with chimney, large wooden frame and Tim roof that looks like tiles. Several other picnic tables around the carpark and other areas
Two good play areas for the kids. Plenty of walks for dogs, bikes, etc. Disappointed that the "wildlife" section only had two geese in it and that they were caged in the space. The same goes with the deer section - at least it was nice to see them close up. Toilets are behind the coffee shop not signposted The maps are somewhat difficult to read - it's not always clear which is a road and a path. Needless to say, we had to backtrack on ourselves several times. Beautiful place to visit though.
Beautiful forest walk / trail and a bonus getting to see the sika deers. You could spend the whole day here free carpark and playground for kids. Picnic area and toilets. Great day out.
Nice place to hike,if going to harder trail's bring some water and food,at the end you can take a ride around the whole forest with a car.
A good place to visit, well marked paths for either a leisurely stroll or a long hike. Also great paths for mountain biking away from the walking paths.
In all of my 6 decades living in Northern Ireland, this is the first time to visit Gortin Forest.....and boy have I really missed out. Beautiful park with lots of lovely hiking trails for all abilities. We opted for the Ladies view trail which is categorised as 'strenuous'. It was fairly steep but doable with a moderate fitness and isn't too long. There is also a sika deer enclosure and a duck pond. The playpark looks absolutely fantastic. My other half said he would love to borrow a child so he could go into it. There is a nice cafe which is open on weekends. We also drove the forest drive which provides lovely views.
We took just a short stop here on our way through, but plan to return for some.mountain biking. Great walks and biking trails. Also the forest drive is very worthwhile and I can never resist it on the way out. We spotted deer along the drive also. Recommend a visit.
A really well kept forest park with clear, maintained trails and the chance to spot plenty of wildlife if you know where to look! Restrooms: Clean toilets, always an added bonus
Been a long time since I've been here. Some things have stayed similar but great changes to suit visitors. Went on a longer walk almost killed me Restrooms: Very well kept Dog-friendliness: Lots of dog walkers and thankfully they all seemed to clean up which is good to see.
