It’s truly the meat supermarket of the north east of England as you’ll find all your meat needs in this place. The price is affordable and cheaper compared to other places. They truly deserve the 5 star rating. Excellent service delivery and quality staff. I’ll surely recommend.
Meet had sell by date of 17/03/23. The night before I got the meat out of the fridge for Sunday dinner it had a green tint to it and smelled really bad, the pictures I have uploaded don't really show the full extent to the green tingennThe smell was that bad when I broke the cling film my whole kitchen was stinking and I had to put it into two carrier bags before putting it in a black bagnnComplete waste of money and sell by dates are completely wrong.nnBowlems needs looking into by environmental health for the standard of meat it is selling
Great variety of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. Bread and cheese are there to, also not as varied. The prices were rised, but are still very competitive. These large family? butchers seem to have find a way to carry good traditions to modern times.nnYou can buy something that is rarely seen in the supermarkets: ox tongue, marrow bones, pig and lamb hearts, tails and ribs, etc. Fancy huge whole legs -who and how cooks them I wonder? Orders for the large barbeque parties can be made over the phone or inside, in advance.nnI like the locally grown fruit and vegetables are sold at very good prices in season. Waxed apples from around the world are still fresher than in some supermarkets. I like the packs of herbs being generous.nnThe cheese section changed about a year ago for the worse. Cooked meat section is still there but, again, less varied as before.nnThe fish section is it another business renting a counter in Bolam? is excellent. It improved from the previous people there, who used to remove price labels from view for some unclear reason. Pleasant to see new young shop assistant being very helpfull and proud of his work. The prices vary. You can buy live mussles and oysters. Also last time I was given 7 days bodeline shellfish without warning. It cooked fine, but I still think they should have mentioned.nnMy concern is hygene, especially in the meat section, because the packaging isn't always strong enough. Cling film is torn too often and meat is exposed for cross-contamination. Make sure you wash your hand and bags because there will be blood spills. On the other hand the products don't seem to stay on the shelves for long, so are fresh. Hand gel is there too. And I never heard of anyone poisoned there, so not reducing stars.nnThe Full Monty canteen, probably named after the great movie, is adjacent to the shop, on the left. I think someone mentioned a lot of the bus drivers lunch there. It is very basic, the food is simple, but very good and inexpensive. Disabled access.nnToilets are in the canteen.nnThere is a petrol station and large Sainsbury's i.e. for milk and yogurt if you are buying for a week in one go.nnAlso, there is a large park further down the dual carrige way.
On this occasion it's three stars. Why? Because the lady behind the seafood counter was coughing all over her hands then handling fresh produce. Why? Because she's a smoker. But why should we pay the price of her bad habit. It wasn't nice, it wasnt professional. Nevertheless, I can't let that detract from the fact that the seafood counter is massively well stocked with a wide variety of produce. The canteen is good I'm going to make myself sound like a right whinger but bear with me and I ordered a full English and asked for toast. I waited and waited and was told I should take my breakfast to the table as the toast would be a while. The plate was cold which meant the food had lost much of its heat by then. I'd finished my breakfast before the toast arrived. Which is a shame because a full English without one's fried egg on a crispy bit of toast shouldn't be optional. Inside the meat supermarket it's well stocked with plenty of good quality fruit, veg, fish and meat and the service is good. There's also a bakery serving pastries and a delicatessen selling cooked meats, pizzas and cheeses. It's always busy and it's a well laid out space. It's got a good atmosphere akin to a market and there's plenty of parking. Well worth a visit. But beware of the T-bone steaks. They're very hit and miss. I've had some which have been mouth-wateringly delicious. And I've had some which have been so tough you couldn't cut them with a machete.
This is the BEST place for vegetables, hands down! Their chilli burgers are amazing too. Great place, Fish Mongers, Butchers, Bakers, Cheese...... plus they have a brilliant canteen too. But prepare to que..... it'll be worth it!
