Very nice, family run for almost 4 decades traditional English pie shop - complete with the parsley “liquor” poured on the pies and mash, as well as very interesting, cold jellied eels. I will say that this food is not for everyone and perhaps that reflects in the reviews. However, the people who run it are friendly and welcoming, the food was hearty and filling add vinegar!, and the mug of coffee went along nicely - no complaints - simple and good, just the way it should be.
As someone who grew up in Los Angeles and lived in 6 different countries by now, I thought I'd give this place a try after seeing an Insider video. I think it is similar to experiences I had at other very traditional restaurants around the world: cozy atmosphere but flavor is quite plain. Perhaps many modern foods are bursting with flavors and I just didn't know how to appreciate this. I wouldn't say it was bad however, it was still enjoyable, but I am content with it being a one time experience.
Really Lovely pie and mash, Crust was crispy with a really nice parsely sauce. Ells were nice but not my type of thing but can definitely see why some would like it! Very friendly waiting staff and will be back again for more sometime.
What a great place to enjoy English cuisine. Me and my daughter went there after seeing the Munchies video on YouTube. The innkeeper and his wife were extremely hospitable. 5 stars from Germany.
World famous. Did not disappoint! Craft beer drinkers take note… just across road from 4 Seasons. Pop over for Pie & Mash
Very traditional experience, people are very friendly and a lot of people from the local community come here. Had the vegan pie. It is very salty compared to other ones I've had but good overall.
I have even seen YouTubers coming from the USA visiting this shop during their stay looking for simple traditional British cuisine. I have been planning as well to go and check it out. Time finally came, and I was not disappointed I got what I expected. Pie was delicious and mashed potato like your mum makes it at home. The so-called liquor that comes with it was also my taste. Some recommended adding some vinegar to it. Service was kind, and we had a chance to see and talk to the owner as well. He is a down to earth easy to chat with person, and it was a pleasure indeed. I told him I was originally from Hungary, so he also showed of his Hungarian pronunciationKeep and the good work
I am American and the first time I visited London, I went straight to F. Cooke. I had a really cool adventure walking through London to get there and experiencing the city. I loved the place. It kind of feels like you are eating at your grandmother by the looks of it. The food itself was also good, the pie and mashed potatoes were great, the green sauce thing was a little too... strong ? by itself, but with a touch of malt vinegar it is also good and it matches the pie really well. Unfortunately I wasn't brave enough to try the Eel, but i kind of regret it, i will surely try it next time. I was very confused to see sawdust on the floor and asked a very kind lady who was a sweetheart by the way, very friendly! who told me it was tradition as eel is very fat and the floor got slippery. Overall, a really cool experience, I totally recommend the place for anyone visiting with a disclaimer: It looks nasty, but it's actually quite tasty, simple food. ps: it was also my very first tea with milk ever, pretty good.
Unpleasant and very abrupt in mannerism from the staff. I came in once to have the girl servicing me crying her eyes out on top of my food as she served it. A terrible impression which my partner eat with the children and I couldn’t. Popular pie&mash is much more friendly and professional but yet still old school More pleasant and are open at more convenient times. No one wants to see bags on eyes on there food crying at there meal.
The oldest pie and mash shop in London. As traditional as it comes. Good food. Well priced.Recommended dishesDouble Pie Double Mash and Liquor
