About

Edwin's French wine bar and restaurant

Story

Edwin's French Wine Bar and Restaurant specialising in Lyonnais dishes opened in London's Shoreditch beginning of October 2012.

The new restaurant is the second venture of Edwin Chan, who opened his first wine bar and restaurant, Edwin's, in Lyon in 2007.

Edwin's specialises in well priced French wines alongside classic, reasonably priced, Lyonnais and regional French dishes. It comprises a 40-seat dining room and a 26-cover wine bar.

Yoan Mebkhout heads up the kitchen, having previously worked at some of Lyon's top restaurants, including Le Comptoir Les Halles, Leon De Lyon, Rue Le Bec and Paul Bocuse's Brasserie Argensson.

The weekly changing menu will feature starters such as salade de Lyon, saucisson brioche, terrine de foie gras, terrine de lapin and marinated salmon. Main courses will include quenelle de brochet, andouillette, and escalope de foie gras.

There also are assiettes of handcrafted French charcuterie and cheeses and daily specials featuring seasonal, regional French classics. Puddings feature soft chocolate cake, creme brulee, ile flottante, and gauffres.

The wines on Edwin's list are privately imported, and sourced by Edwin's Lyon. The list features 3,000 bottles from 70 different producers representing all the major wine regions of France. Bottles range from £20 to £35 with grands vins from £48 to £65 and glasses from £4 to £6.

If you are looking for exceptional regional french wine, Edwin's is the perfect place. The prices are fair as Edwin imports directly from the wine producers. The bar it's self is peaceful, no loud music, making it perfect for a conversation with friends or someone special. Food at Edwins is simple and rich with fresh and local produce. Wine and Cheese? He does that the best!
Excellent wine and delicious cheese/charcuterie. The staff members are helpful and extremely friendly, including Edwin himself. I really enjoyed my evening and will definitely be going back soon.
Very nice service, although we were alone in the restaurant. Selection of cheeses was of good quality. Wine was also very good. Maybe a bit on the pricey side, as we paid c.£60 for the cheese board and the bottle of wine to feed 2 people
Oh wow what a find! We started off the evening here and ended here with an amazing selection of wine, cheese and charcuterie that's chopped up meat for the non French. The selection of wine was amazing and not even expensive, we sucked on a bottle of red sub 20 quid. This is one of the lesser known places in Shoreditch/City where wine aficionados can enjoy their chosen vintage without the pretentiousness of some other places I've been to. We were recommended a few different types of wine throughout the night and ended up somehow on some Champagne with 10 other randomers who we met that night. Great place highly recommend it and make sure you get a cheese platter to snack on.
Amazing food. THE BEST foie gras in London. Edwin is a friendly, gracious host, with expertise in finding great wines, from obscure wineries at the best prices. Love it.
A travesty of French cuisine. We ordered a cheese platter, that was exclusively made up of strong and aged cheeses an aged bleue d'auvergne, a camembert de normandie, a compte, a brie de meaux, and a livarot. I do like cheese but the strong selection undermined the experience. Well made Cheese platters need balance and harmony; this composition was too strong for pleasure -1. We ordered a glassed of wine, that came cold -1 like pop. We ordered a medium-well rib-eye steak that was not very good: the cooking was medium well but the surface was excessively char-grilled diner style. We ordered a lemon sole, which came ! undercooked and was hardly edible sole is normally a well cooked fish; fried in butter to perfection. The vegetable were the least bad part of the meal, even there the potatoes were dry and overs seasoned with thyme and rosemary. The service was courteous and Edwin made a point to chat with each and every guest. Overall the food was very disappointing and the expertise in wine lacking. In fact this is one of the worst restaurants I have visited in London.
I have to echo reviewer Nabil Elisa's comments: the interior lacks coherent character, is cold-feeling, and looks rather cheap and stapled together. Edwin himself seemed diffident no sin, but hardly a plus point - the staff that served me were neither experienced, knowlegable or charming. On the plus side: the wine was okay, and novel, and not overpriced - also... no musak playing, which is good for nattering away. I've made two visits, and I also passed by during the day this week late August but it appeared to be closed.
A hidden gem - cool, calm wine bar run by a charming Hong Kong expat Edwin who spent a decade in France learning his craft. Fine wines, reasonably priced and excellent French cheese and bread.
A great place to catch up with friends. A a good selection of wine and delicious cheese/charcuterie options.
Great evening, quiet, but food was nice.
