East Somerset Railway

Story

The East Somerset Railway was inaugarated in 1855 and opened as a broad-gauge line from Witham on the Westbury to Weymouth line to Shepton Mallet in 1858, extending to Wells in 1862. Unfortunately, the line was not commercially successful and it was sold to the Great Western Railway in 1874. The railway continued on GWR and then BR hands, essentially unchanged, until 1963 when passenger services were withdrawn. Freight traffic was also reduced and the line cutback. Bitumen trains continued to Cranmore until 1985 and stone trains still use the branch as far as Merehead Quarry.

In 1967, the artist David Shepherd bought two steam engines, BR standard class 9F No.92203 and standard class 4MT No.75029, and was looking for somewhere to base them. After starting out at Longmoor in Hampshire, he looked at 31 sites in the south of England until arriving at Cranmore on a rainy day in 1971. Whilst a site of dereliction, he could see the potential and so he and some friends purchased the site, and the Cranmore Railway Company was born.

The site was cleared, a new engine shed and sidings built, and then in August 1974, the East Somerset Railway was opened. As Cranmore station was still used for Bitumen traffic, initially operations were from a small platform next to the engine shed (now Cranmore West), but with the end of the freight traffic, the ESR returned to Cranmore station in 1985. The line was also extended westwards towards Shepton Mallet and a new station build at Mendip Vale.

What a place! Fab range of activities including the train - which is a short journey along the line, a playground for young children, a fantastic cafe, small shop, toilet facilities and picnic area. It also includes a signal box to enter, workshop area and display boards explaining the site. Fab day out.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Very interesting. The museum and the signal box. It has a model shop and cafe. The train ride is only 8 miles round trip, but it does go through some lovely countryside. With a level of comfort modern trains don't have.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A hidden gem. This beautiful steam railway takes you back in time meandering through the idyllic Somerset countryside. Good car parking, excellent cafe and wonderfully preserved station all add to the romance. Regular steam services through the summer with cream teas, and other specials. A fabulous afternoon out.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Dedicated volunteers keeping a section of our heritage alive. A short but pleasant trip on a historic trainline with lovely views. The cafe serves a good range of food with seating inside and out. Lots to see around the platform area and beyond. Well worth a visit interesting and fun time had.
I went on Spring Gala day and the railway was super busy but very well organised. Steam engines were all in the right position so as soon as one train came in the other was ready and waiting to whisk passengers away again. The staff were very enthusiastic with much whistle-blowing and loud puffing. The route is short but sweet so nobody fidgety will get bored and the scenery changes quite a bit on the short route. The loco shed is very cool to see so you can appreciate all the hard elbow grease that goes into keeping the trains running all year. The only down side is the stations were super crowded at each end of the line, and I didn’t like that so much, particularly in Mendip Vale. So if crowds aren’t for you, I’d suggest going on quieter days. Otherwise I think it’s a relaxing but brief way to get the most out of East Somerset.
Thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at Cranmore. The father in law was booked on a driver experience event so we tagged along and I'm so glad we did. The staff were very informative and helpful. I am disabled and they did everything possible to make my visit hassle free. We will be returning as due to a prior engagement we were a bit pushed for time and would like to take a proper look around and get a bite to eat. 10/10 highly recommended.

Great day out at the railway it's not a long train ride but it's great to experience an steam train ride with the smell of coal in the air at a good price. Nice day out with the family and had very clean toilets and baby changing facility . staff are friendly and I recommend the cafe at the station food was delicious. Thank you to the staff for a lovely day
Every heritage railway in the Somerset area has something different to offer. So it was pointed out by the gentleman I spoke to at the other railway close to Shepton Mallet. And he was absolutely right. This may not be the biggest heritage railway in Somerset, but it still has plenty going on. We visited at Easter and they had craft stalls, as well as their own shop, Punch and Judy, and, amazingly, a chance to share the footplate of a small steam shunter for just a tenner! The line itself is just shy of three miles long, and the round trip takes a little over 35 minutes, with a stop for photos at Mendip Vale at the other end of the line. For £14 for adults, you can ride up and down all day if you feel like it. We combined our visit with one to the other railway in the area, the Somerset and Dorset at Midsomer Norton, about 20 minutes away, so had a grand day out at two railways.
