Drumpellier Country Park

Story

Drumpellier Country Park is a country park situated to the west of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The park was formerly a private estate. The land was given over to the Burgh of Coatbridge for use as a public park in 1919, and was designated as a country park in 1984 by the then Monklands council, part of Strathclyde Regional Council. The park covers an area of 500acre and comprises two natural lochs (one of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)), lowland heath, mixed woodlands and open grassland. The Monkland Canal lies towards the southern perimeter of the park. The lochs and the canal attract a large number of water birds, both resident (such as swans and mallard ducks) and over-wintering migrants, and the loch shores and woodland floor provides an abundance of wild flora. The woodlands are also rich in bird life, small wild animals and many types of fungi. The lochs at Drumpellier are part of a chain of kettle ponds formed towards the end of the last ice age. As the glacier that covered most of Scotland slipped down towards the sea it churned up great tracts of land. This created the great lochs, such as Lomond and Linnhe, and also produced small pockets of water such as the Garnkirk chain of Hogganfield, Frankfield and the Bishops Lochs (an SSI that comes under Glasgow City Councils administration) that include Drumpellier's Lochs, Woodend and Lochend. The loch side path is approximately 1 mile long and it is suitable for bikes.

Nice park to stretch the little ones legs around Lochend Loch. Lots of parking and easy access to a path that will take you around the perimeter of the park. The Loch has plenty of Swans an Geese. Plenty of Picnic tables along the way. We went to the “Crannog” park which my little fella really enjoyed, it was well later out and one of the best parks I have come across in the area. We finished our little trip with a visit to the Icecream Van. Looked a great place for a walk or run, I did see a lot of dogs being walked also.
This is a fantastic country park with loads of paths for walking and exploring! Lakes with loads of sucks, swans, geese and other birds. Amazing play areas for the kids. Visitor centre with tea coffee and snacks. Loads of parking. Best bit is exploring the woods on the far side.
Really enjoyed this country park. Has a really big modern play area at one side and another play park across the loch. Lots of woodland walks as well!
Brilliant big park two play parks with in it so if you have younger our old kids they'll love it especially the big wooden play park for the older kids has a cafe n toilets too sometimes there's an icecream van
Great psrk for all the family, from young to older generation there is something for everyone. A huge lake to walk around that's 1.2miles around beautiful views and great outside. One of the best parks I've been too with my 3 children age 5, 13 and 14 :-
Litter pick here often. Great place to visit, great parks for the kids. Great walks for the dogs and loads of birds/wildlife to see and feed. Just wish people would remember to put their rubbish in a bin before they leave
Nice walk around the loch but can be a bit busy at times. Tons of geese and ducks. But the best part is the forest off to one side. Some nice easy walks through there, and it's usually pretty empty in my experience.
One of my most favourite places to visit. Love walking round the lock and through the woods. Always stop in the Peace Garden and feed the birds and squirrel. So peaceful.
Really nice place to bring the kids or the dogs. Plenty of parking and nice wide flat tarmac paths, easy with a buggy or wheelchair. Nice wee cafe with limited items. Restrooms: Toilets available. Disabled cubical has a baby change facility. Dog-friendliness: Dog friendly yes Picnic area: Outdoor seating available by the cafe.
A great place for a walk during the pandemic. The playpark is open and the woodland walk. However the café and visitor centre are closed, as expected.
